If thats the opening your looking at then your fine ,no worries thats just the intake snorkel.

It leads to the snorkel which is open to the atmosphere. So in basic by not having it on there all you have done is shorten the snorkel.

I say take it off, more air going into the carb, the better your quad will run if jetted accordingly.
