I just bought a 98 Blaster and was told that the engine needed a top and bottom end rebuild. Well after getting home and opening the motor it the block was all cracked and had holes all over it from when the rod broke. Its also missing the kick start, and rear brake. How much do you guys figure it will cost to get it back running. I was hoping to spend no more than $600 total, already spent $150 on what I will call now a rolling chassis lol.
Is it possible? If not, I guess I will resell everything, maybe part it out and see if I can make my money back.
 
First off, Welcome!! Glad to have another member aboard!

You can probably get the Blaster fixed within the $ 600.00 budget. Post some pics on here (upload them to Photobucket and copy/paste the code) so we can see what sort of project and damage you are dealing with.

You may only need a new set of engine cases and a crank, and you can get a used set of cases and a new crank PLUS have your top end done for a few hundred $$. A new kicker is no big deal, and awk08 can hook you up with a killer set of rear brakes when the time comes...

Especially if you've never enjoyed your own Blaster before, I'd hang onto it and fix it! You'll have so much fun on one once its fixed that you won't want to get rid of it. :D

Welcome! Whoa, ya that's a good one! Contact sicivicdude, send him a PM he repairs them and also takes trades, great guy and knows his stuff!

And I'll agree to get it up and running can be done for around $600!

Keep at it and a word of advice, If you want to buy something from a member, Pm them as you have to have 300 posts and be a member for three months to post in those threads. That is due to so many bad deals... There is another option to posting in the forsale and wanted sections, If you get a $10 membership and have 30 posts you'll be good to go. Not necessary but is encouraged as the amount of knowledge you'll recieve will be worth way more than the measly 10 bucks!

How the heck does a rod get snapped in half?

If your on a tight budget I wouldn't worry about cosmetically fixing anything. cause it all looks the same when it's dirty!

Did it score the cylinder at all?
 
You got your work cut out for ya! It's gonna be costly, but If it were me I'd replace every bearing in that case. Cost=$200 I have done this with my motor as to avoid any issues. If there wasn't as much dammage as you have there then You may be able to stick with new crank bearings but if ya want reliability I would do them all IMO!
 
yep, the cylinder has a pretty deep groove in it.
I have no idea how they snapped the rod in half like that. I have no problem replacing all the bearings but the case is shot completely, it has way too many holes and I dont think it can be fixed.
I have never rebuilt a motor, what will I need?

Ya they look pretty bad! Well to do the job correctly first thing is a parts and service manual so ya know what goes where and torque specs. Airleak tester is a must!

I have never put a bottom end togther, I took it all apart cleaned and labeled everything, but didn't feel confident enough to do it right! So I sent mine to a builder on here - http://kenoconnorracing.com/. He checked it all over put in a +3 stroker crank, ported/matched, bored. Then I had an air leak and some trouble with my Vforce 2 reed cage, and blew that fuker up in no time! Sent the top end back to him and started over again,, I have about 1500 in my motor, but it would of been less if i would of caught the airleak! Check out his site the prices are listed. He is a great Blasty bruther to deal with, and has exceptional service!
 
Your suppose to use yamabond when you put the case halves together.

While you have it apart there is a shiftstar mod that most have done pretty easy to do just a matter of taking the sharp points off the star and making them round! If porting isn't in the budget this time, cleaning the imperfections castings in the aluminum helps.

If ya need parts, there is quite a few members on here from florida that may be able to help ya out and save some shipping!

Looks like your commited to fix it. There's not much there to part out. Basically a completely stock bike that's been seriously neglected. I'd do a complete restore
and feel satisfied that you were able to bring her "back from the dead"

and just search there other auctions for different size pistons or call them.....this is the kit I bought when I did my total rebuild comes with everything seals gaskets bearings the works
