new guy

Thanks for the info awk. I actually didn't read the fellas rep but I haven't been burned on eBay yet so I never do. The parts came in today and look great. Need to buy new nuts for the base of the jug and I'm considering new reeds. I can't remember if the ones I have are stock or not. Found some on eBay for ~$130. Since the bike has been sitting so long is that something that needs replacing? Also I cleaned the main jet off and I think it says 270? I'm thinking a good starting point would be 290-300? Its a stock bore stock reeds (I think) Toomey exhaust, k&n filter with no lid. Sound about right? Depending on the answers I get on the reeds reassembly will start soon....I hope

Less than 1% of purchase unhappy on over 10,000 sales.
Poor packaging breaking parts, generic pictures, Canada based (yea for me) not US, several out of stocks, breaking recoil starters, "overnight" deliveries are slow and not factory OEM parts. 99% of the folks were happy.

I think I'd still take the gamble for this price.

If reeds look good, no cracks, bends, frays or wear, run them. Reeds normally run $30-$60, ~$130 should buy a complete reed cage.

Sorry I am no help with jets, but yes, go rich and buy a spread of them. You will probably use them for different weather.

found some used reeds in the off topic ebay deals thread and a carb that would be a decent place to start. if you dident put any money down yet for your mods between 270-300 most likely

I suppose I will hold off on reeds then. Thanks guys. I was messing with the piston and I put the rings on it. I'm somewhat concerned because they seem to big diameter wise. Do I need to file them or anything?

If you are concerned if the rings are too large/tight, insert them vertically into the bore and when you reach midway between the top of the cylinder and the highest port, swing them horizontally around to fit in the bore.

THE RING GAP SHOULD READ 0.08" to 0.014"

In no way slinging off at you but do you have the rings fitted correctly on the piston with the brass ring stoppers between the ring ends.

It is surprising how many mechanics that are used to 4 pokes fall into that trap.

Not true, if your ring gap is too small when measured in the bore you will need to file them in to spec.

well people like us probably could with a little guidence from a certified mechanic but he clearly knows as much as we tell him and he could inadvertanly take far to much off. that install guide is boss follow it to the T

Actually I know more than what I let on. I don't need this forum I just wanted to make sure my build was perfect. I need nothing from you. I appreciate your internet insult and I will continue to ask questions here as long as the good folk will answer them. If you're wishing for a pissing contest you're in the wrong thread.

So all of you that know what you're talking about I can't tell you how much I value you're input. Thanks again fellas.

found this crack. guess i should of looked sooner. i assume this thing is toast??

What piece is that a pic of?

Fileing the ring end gap is Standard Operating Procedure. Don't know about other brands, but with Weisco, out of the 5 sets, 10 rings total I only had to file one ring. And that only took 2-3 lite swipes with a smooth file.

?????? pardon me but where the hell is this coming from? I clearly dont know you or claim to know how much you know thats why I'm putting it simply and bluntly what should or should not be done but because I dont wanna be the guy that dosent say something and you do it and it costs you $800 to redo your entire top and bottom end. because you may or may not chose to do something that is less than adequet for your blaster. I am sorry if you saw it this way. i did not want in any way to start a peeing contest with you dude.

Are you sure thats a crack? it looks like "casting flash" to me by looking at the picture.

casting flash and its unatimous probably a casting flash

That seems to be the general concensus is casting flash. Thanks guys. The picture is the top of the crank and what I thought to be a crack is the inside of the right case. You can see a bit of the connectimg rod in the picture and it is leaning towards the front of the bike. I'm on call until Sunday so I will try and get back after it Monday I hope...
