I just put together a new top end on my buddies blaster. Hes running AmsOil Dominator premix oil 32:1 and the engine barley smokes. It throws a little smoke when ideling and a little bit on first bit of throttle but it cleans up at 1/2 all the way to WOT. Hes still in the break end stage. Did three heat cycles and of cource did a leak down. I also checked the plug and its dry? We put the biggest jets in the carb we had for the break in. 165 main and 60 pilot. Hes ruuning a 80 over jug with KOR DIY port job. A 33mm PWK with a clamp on K&N with a velocity tube and a Right-Hand Bend Exhaust. Also the engine is getting 165 psi of compression.

The engine starts well with the 60 pilot but I know the 165 isnt right. It sputters a bit at 1/2 to WOT. We dropped down to a 162 and it feels alot better. I just didnt want to drop any more jet sizes when the plugs not wet and its not throwing smoke. What could it be? The AmsOil or what???

Keep in mind, fuel evaporates. If could be getting hot enough to evaporate any fuel that is on the plug. Not saying this is the answer, but have you plug chopped? I would start there and see what the spark plug says at the base. Are you positive you mixed 32:1? Not doubting you, just clarifying.

Positve on getting the mixture right. So your saying by the time I pull the plug out it may have evaportated off? Havnt done any plug chops yet cuz its still on its 1st tank of fuel for the easy going break in.

I'm not positive, I was just throwing a suggestion out there. I know when I pull my plug, if it takes me a minute, it comes out dry, if I have gloves and can pull it 10 seconds after I kill the machine, it will be wet.

Good call on not plug chopping yet, give it a bit. Check out the video link in my sig for KOR Heat Cycles, he says you can go WOT, just not for long periods of time....then again, what is a long period of time???

Should still have a wet plug tho right?

If fuel is getting to it, then yes. It will only be wet if too much fuel is getting to it and saturating it. If you have too much oil in the premix, then you will start fouling the plug vs. flooding the plug and it would be coated with oil...maybe not much, but enough.

Oh... I was told that when jetting a two stroke you should jet up just till when you start getting a wet plug. So maybe this is too fat? You want right before that and the only way to find out is by doing a plug chop right?

Actually, when jetting you want to start rich and work your way down. That way you do not risk cooking your piston...

Lean it out until it just starts to clean up. Some opt to go one jet richer from that point to keep their engine from overheating.

If you are having mysterious lean conditions, it could be an air leak. Was a leakdown done after the rebuild?

Yeah I did a leak down after the build. Only lost .5 psi of the 7psi over five minutes. I sprayed head, base, and reed gaskets and didn't see any leaks. I though it was either too small to worry about or its a small leak in a crank seal. Anyway so you of course start large and work your way down but how would you go up one size of a jet when it finally clears up? Seems like it would cut out again? Im just going to work my way down one size at a time since I have all the jets between 165 and 140.

Im not sure if it's a stock needle or not. It's a PWK 33 so it's definatly not a stock carb if that's what your thinking. I thought the needle jet was only used for 1/2 to 3/4 throttle?

the needle goes into the throat of the main jet. that is what opens teh fuel flow. the taper of he needle depicts how fast it opens. also the clip placement does that too. there should be letters on the side of the needle somewhere. I think CEL is stock

What i would personally try is going back up a jet and drop the clip on needle one. Is it a stock needle? Just sounds like a similar problem i had once. And, just as far as oil, I've been sold on castor oil

:o NOBODY IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WAS EVER SOLD ON CASTOR OIL....lol. That's the stuff your grandma used to shove down your throat when you were sick.

I'm pretty sure you mean Castrol Syntec???

Been using castor since 1973. Put a bazzillion hours on my Elsinore, was only halfway to service limit when I tore it apart. Unfortunatly they don't sell Castrol R30 in the U.S. So it's Klotz Benol for me.

Yeah, I guess I'm sold on it, and my son is too I:I. LOVE the smell I:I B)

I wouldn't use synthetic to break in a fresh top end. It lubricates too well which may not allow your rings to seat properly.

NO. I mean.

That jug was $34 at the shop btw.

Gees am I the lucky one, I have just made the switch to Castrol R30, due to the unavalibility of Maxima 927.

Can't comment on it yet as I have only been usuing for a few months, but it still smells a sweet as the 927.

I am running the 33, and my jetting is 48pilot, 150 main, CEL needle middle (third) clip position, She screams! Plug chop confirms good, actually I could drop to 148 main but I like it a hair on the richer side! However I am running the toomey, and I know the right bends (at least my power pros) like a richer main. I:I
