More hassle than the gains worth?

I was searching on the forum for more stuff to do to the new blasty now that its officially freezing balls here and ran across the +4 timing mod and since it was free figured hey wtf not but dont know if its really worth it?

this new one is mild just the FMF gnarly pipe,DG silencer with steel wool packing, boysen reeds and stock cage, wiseco .050/137psi,oil block off 32:1/93 octane,Tors eliminator,UNI 2 stage filter,300 main 32.5 pilot stock carb.

Will the +4 timing mod be worth it with those particular mods or am i wasting my time?

Also while on this subject if i was to now advance my timing on the big bore kit say 2-3 degrees or even 4 with the lower psi of 167 instead of the 180 i had before would it be worth or just cause me more issues possibly ending with me rebuilding it?

The timing mod doesn't increase power output on pump gas significantly. On pump you're safe going up to about 4 degrees advanced (depending on the particular engine, my BBK won't handle any advance but it's not like I need any either!).

It's been my experience that a small increase in timing bumps up the "low and mid" range while possibly losing a bit on the very top. With an FMF gnarly pipe, losing on top isn't a huge problem, the pipe doesn't put out there anyway.

So whats your personal opinion on doing them?go or no go?

Do it, unless your engine can't handle it. Worst that can happen is you don't like it or find out your engine can't handle it and turn it back down. Luckily it's just right under the flywheel....

I am interested in some performance gains on my bike as well, what is a "timing mod" and would it help my bike go faster?

The timing mod will not make any more speed, in fact it may slow it down some.

+3 TO 4 deg on the timing will give more get up and go, especially if your pipe is designed for the low/mid range.

Oh ok, well what can I do to make it go faster without spending a lot?

Generally, the faster you want to go, the more money it's going to cost.

If you have a completely bone stock blaster there are a few simple upgrades you can do to make a marked difference in your performance. The best bang for the buck is a pipe, jet kit for the carb, new airfilter, and removing the airbox lid. That helps a stock engine breath better.

Once you go past that point, you start to need more aftermarket parts to "support" the mods. BBK's need larger carburetors which require changing the throttle carble and modifying the airbox, stroker cranks sometimes need the cases trenched but at a minimum need porting to maximize the benefit. Porting and getting the head rechambered are pretty good bangs for the ol' dollar but only once you've upgraded the exhaust and induction systems to match.

A larger front sprocket and/or smaller rear, will give more speed at the cost of acceleration.

Larger diameter tyres will also bring the speed up.

HI
I've got a FMF fatty with powercore 2 boyesen reeds uni air filter lid off
290 main on stock carb
The timming mod did give me some more response and better low end
i did about 4º then backed off a bit due to some loss off top speed
2-3 degrees seems best to me
You can play with it a bit but take care with the bolts that hold the stator
you can strip the heads quite easy
Arround here pump gas is 95 or 98 octains

Looks like ill be giving it a try.

Whats the best method you guys have found to elongate the holes?

I was thinking the trusty old dremel with a side cutting bit?
