I recently baught 2 1998 Yamaha Blasters for $800.00 One of them runs great with a FMF fatty, nerf bars, jetted, and i beleave a Wesico piston and rings. Now for the bad it has no rear brakes. it supposedly just needed rear pads so i got a set of half used for free from a freind of mine but after i put it together the cable doesnt even move at all. But from what i have read here there seems to be a problem with the rear brakes. And the other one i got just needs a top end rebuilt, a chain, air filter, and the front right drum wing nut and brake cyclinder thing that the threaded piece goes through. So if you guys have any advice it would be most appreciated. I found a cable on ebay brand new for 23 after shipping.
Thanks

yea just do what he said ^^ .. mine worked great but then my cable snaped and it was a almost new shorty cable .. so i made hydro set up for cheap haha never going back lol..

My rear brakes work awesome!, I can kill the engine in ANY gear and skid the rear tires for 50-75'?
My Blaster must be the only one that the stocker brakes work on!?

The cable rear caliper works great if you know how it works and how to adjust it. You have an adjustment issue or a bad cable or both. My advice is to replace the cable and then download the service manual in the DIY section and adjust it according to manufacturer specs. You should have no problems then. The only people that say the stock cable caliper is crap are the people that don't either know what they are doing or haven't taken the time to figure it out.

yeah i took it apart to be curious the other day and i seen the white plastic geared adjuster on the top. my cable doesnt pull or anything so i found that short cable to elemenate the long one that goes up to the lever so i figured id by that one and should be set to go. thanks for all the input guys! most appreciatedI:I

Make sure you clean up the cylinder that the brake pad goes in.. That seems to be where all the dirt on earth seems to gather.. We took some very fine emery cloth, and polished it up before we put it back together. Now we can lock up the rear brakes like hydraulic (almost).

We also installed the shorty cable which seemed to eliminate alot of problems.

if u get new brakes get the newer hydraulic brakes, because blaster brakes are bad if there just normal and not haudralic, im on my third pair and i dont even ride all that hard, so next time i replace my breaks im getting hydraulic breaks instead, u shuld consider that too
