hey guys i know this guy who has a 01 400ex that the top end went bad and he has no money to fix it so he wants to trade for my stock blaster with itp tires on the rear , he says it needs about 400 dollars to put the top end back together , does this sound right or should i steer away?

dont worry you will still see me though im building a 240 blaster for comp as we speakI:I

Its all about the condition of the bikes. Monetarily if in good condition the 400ex is a better deal. The 2001 400ex is an okay bike, but nothing special. Sucks that it dont have a real "grab bar", its molded into the frame. There prone to alot of problems. Remember this though a blown top end on a 4 choke could be even more serious as in if he shattered the piston then your splitting cases and flushing them out. Its a DIY job but a big one. And your looking between $200-$400 for rebuild parts etc.

4 choke or no 4 choke, at the end of the day it is about the cash. If your good enough to preform the said repairs, could you make some money on it?

If so, I would (only if I had my spare Blaster in the shoadows lurking) and then sell it!

in my opinion no, 4 smokers are expensive to rebuild......... one reason is that its fairlyold, needs to be rebuilt, and if you like to do wheelies ahhhhh since the "grab bar is basically the frame ide stay clear of this deal........ keep the blasty!

What are you talking about? The grab bar is basically the same the same? The frame on 400ex is no different than any other quad. It has a removable subframe, and like any other quad, you can put a grab bar on it, so I dont know what your talking about.

Well this sounds a little weird. What shape is your blaster in, year, and is it modded? You could get stuck in a hole if this guy is trading his 400ex for a some what stock blaster. From your posting it may seem he tryings to pull a fasty on you. Talk to him some and see what is good with it. Does it just need motor work? Did the piston break in the cylinder and theres pieces in the bottom end? Does it need new valves, cams, cylinder, piston and rings or you simply just get a bore/hone, new piston and rings and be fine. Is the frame tweaked, a-arms bent, swingarm no good? Bearings shot, tires good? Check into real good. When buying a four stroke you gotta know what to look for so you dont get ripped.

i would have him tear it down and inspect it and see what happened in the engine, that way you can see what your getting in to.....4 pokes can break your bank really fast when it comes to parts....

Especially if its something bad.
Like I said if this guys does pull a fasty on you, I bet you he would. It doesnt run and a non-running quad could/ be a big mistake. He could of threw a rod, you might have to get oversized valves, the clutch maybe completely done, the cam could be fried. Theres just so many things.

i would take a look at it see what it needs like blasterboy said. i traded my blown up banshee for a running 400ex and i like it its kinda nice, but i would never trade my blaster for one.

The 400ex doesn't have a removeable grab bar. If you bend or tweek it, you have to replace the whole $200-$400 sub frame. There are companies that make a sub frame that will accept a 250r grab bar though that you can just bolt on like a normal quad.
I'd do what the guys are saying, check it out very carefully and ask alot of questions about it.

sh*t, why did I think he was talking about a 450r? My bad.

400ex are stupid stupid stupid reliable machines!! if it gernaded it way beat to hell and back 3 times over!! there is ONE on CL around here for sale thats blown up! and about 40 of them that are not.. i wouldnt even fk around with the deal, only way i would do it would be #1 you can get your hands on a runing complete motor for cheap, and #2 he adds cash to the deal,
