1911 is a sweet shootin gun, and the baby eagle aka jericho semi compact 9mm,.40,.45 are pretty bad ass to.

and i forgot to mention the S&W 22 magnum its a lil beast

just go with the 9mm they are perfect for self defense in my opinion. if she ever needed to actually shoot the gun is more likely to wound the guy rather than killing him with a big 45. for self defense do you really need a huge gun if your accurate enough one shot from the 9 will drop a person easy. just my two cents

nah nah....i am personally a fan of a 9mm cause there is little to no kick back when u shoot it and it deff has enough power to bring down a good average sized guy or even bigger.....9MM ALL THE WAY

Ok, since I am in LE people have this debate all the time. I will give you my thought. Since you wife is not ever gun savy get her some thing that is Barney simple to shoot. So a Glock, Springfield or sililar weapon would be gun. Both have "safetys" that are not a switch style. Springfield has a safety on the trigger and on the back strap and Glock has a safety on the trigger as well. Also both compact or subcompact models can hold 8-10 rounds. Another good option would be the S&W AirWeight. It is a 5 round revolver and is avalible WITHOUT a hammer. This makes it very very easy use. Pull the trigger and the bullet comes out. So these are the guns I would look at: Glock 27, Springfield XD 3in Subcompact or the XD compact model is nice as well or the S&W AirWeight 380 revolver.

Another thing you should do is have her shoot various different sizes of guns. Although a small subcompact style gun seems like it would be the easiest for her to shoot because she is small and the gun is small that may not be the case. Smaller guns are actually HARDER to shoot because there is less of a grip to hold on to and since the barrel is shorter thus harder to aim. Just keep that in mind when looking. A longer barrel is going to keep the bullet going straighter for longer. But since you are looking into home defense so 5-10 feet you will just be point and shooting anyways. Your not having to knock a bowling pin down at 50 yards w a hand gun.

Lastly as far as caliber. How much knock down power do you want? Do you want her to have to pump the whole magazine in the guy before he stops or do you want her to fire a round or two put the guy to the ground and then have a few rounds left over just in case this dirtbag has a friend or two with him. The 9mm was the original weapon used in LE but, they learned soon that it did not have enough knock down power. So a lot of LE went to .45. This had great knock down power but, the velocity of a round that big was slow and the magazine compacity was small (7-9 rounds) So, they came up with the .40. This round has great knock down power and the magazines can hold in upwards of 17 rounds. I myself am a huge fan of the 40 caliber weapon. A 380 round is also a good round but, a bit violent and it causes some distruction.

These are just all my opinions and everybody has their own. Just giving some in site. Let us all know with what you go with.

A 1911 is a big boy gun...Not a gun that you want to get for your wife who does not like guns and wants something nice and easy to shoot.
yeah... well actually I was looking at that one more for me.:D Hey, I'm shopping for my wife, but if I see a good deal for myself there's nothing wrong with that.

Anybody have any hands on exp with a 1911. Hows the recoil. more of a thud or a sharp snap? I know I have fired sigs in both 9mm and 45acp and personally I thought the 45 was easier to control. more of a slow blunt recoil than the quick snappy recoil of the 9mm.

Like I said, before I buy anything for her I will take her to the range so she can choose for herself what she is most comfortable with. If shes only wants a 22 (I hope not) then that's what I'll get her, I guess with a big enough mag its better than nothing. But if she finds out that she is comfortable with a bigger round like a 45acp or maybe even8-| a 454 cassull 0r a 45-70 govt. (I know. Not going to happen. just wishfull thinking) then thats what she'll get.

My brother has a Taurus Millennium as his off duty carry. His is not pink however. This gun is a decent little gun BUT, since it is a hammer less DOUBLE action weapon the trigger pull is hard and long. Also there is a safety that you have to manually flip. For a first time gun shooter/somebody that is not really comftroable with guns a weapon like this is not the best. The long hard trigger pull is going to be harder to shoot. It can really make the gun pull to one side or the other if you dont have a nice even pull. Also with the manual safety if the situation really came down to it and she had to shoot and forgot to take off the safety it could be problems. Every second is vital when there is a threat in front of you. Best to just have a weapon that you can point and shoot.

Can't go wrong with a .17 HMR. lol. More powerful than a .22 and damn simple to use. Besides, I'm sure she's not looking to kill the guy, just stop him long enough to have time to get away/call 911. There should be plenty of power there to stop somebody for long enough to do so. My opinion though.

A gun is a lethal weapon designed to kill not injure. If you ever shoot at anything you better have the intention of killing it.

#1 Rule at the academy: Do not point your weapon at anything you do not wish do distroy or kill.
