if reliability is the only factor, the only choice is a revolver:

proof-

you and i are in a gun battle at point blank. we both fire at exactly the same time, and miraculously we both fail to discharge. you have a semi-auto, you have to reach your other hand up, rechamber a new round, bring the gun back up, aim, fire.

i had a revolver, all i had to do was shoot again, the carriage turns, loads a new round and shoots it.

REVOLVERS DONT JAM!

they can be harder to get acustom to, as the trigger pull is usually very hard initially, then at the end of the pull, release easily, it takes practice to learn to pull the trigger halfway, aim, then finish pulling. if it has a short barrel, it is harder to shoot accurately.

that being said, i LOVE my Glock 17 fullsize 9mm, so does my girl. smaller weapons may seem easier to handle, but more barrel/upper receiver mass equals less recoil. get her the biggest thing she is comfortable with. watch out for "slide bite" on any semi-auto that does not have a beaver tail, that can be discouraging to a new shooter.

.40 smith and wesson is the most effective round with managable recoil, but a good bit more recoil than a 9mm.

springfield XD series is a nice line, the 1911's are a classic, the shotty is best, and if you research your local laws governing the matter it may be legal to manufacture your own "sawed off". here in florida you can.hehehe.

my next $0.02, AVOID HI-POINT AT ALL COSTS! i know 3 people who have them and none of them function properly. they are dirt cheap for a reason, go with a brand name.

you have to watch for ammo to come in stock, ever since obama was elected.sign up to email lists, use the "in stock notifications", stockpile while you can before the serial number on projectiles thing is passed, and prices skyrocket even further.

Well my wife has decided that she would rather not have a gun, she refuses to practice with one and seems somewhat scared of them. So I have decided that she would be better off with a tazer or some other kind of non-lethal weapon (maybe even one of those big cans of pepper spray they use on bears). That way if she hesitates and is disarmed, at least its not her own gun they can use against her. I do still plan on getting a hand gun though. after a lot of research I have narrowed it down to a new Springfield XD-M a new Glock 17C(if I decide to go with a 9mm) or a used Sig p226 40 S&W DAO(I can pick one up in great shape for $400)

As far as the high point goes I have had 2 (the 9mm carbine and the 9mm pistol) of them and both were junk. lots of fail to feed issues. Never again.

if she is scared, thats a good decision...im fortunate, my girl enjoys shooting, and is good at it, her first shot always goes to the neck...remind me to never piss her off.lol. she says she wants to shoot the shotty next....yay!

stun guns are a good alternative, remember if you hold them wrong, they shock you too.pepper spray gets the whole room/house, so it gets you too. there are pepper foam sprays that are more controlled. another good thing is always 911, gotta love them cops, most of the time.lol. alarm companys have a thing where if your alarm goes off, they call you, and ask for a password, if you say anything other than the password, they come silent.

maybe she has a girlfriend who shoots, that might help get her interested.

good luck with your choice.

Well where im from we arent allowed handguns.... but i will give a +1 to the dog...
I have a little 48lb pitbull and a 100lb doberman on my farm which sits alone for most of the day and night.....

If i were to buy myself a gun if i was allowed.. id get a smith and wesson .22 that i shot down in carolina at the gun range.. not much kick back, enough to do that job...
and like the other person said... 1 shot is a warning.... so you dont kill em... but if you need to shots 2-5 will get the job done..

i dont feel like reading all of this, but have you thought about taking her out and letting her shoot the shotty?
but i think a 9mm would be good.
a .45cal gun just seems way to big.

it seems like you are more worried about the recoil than the size of the gun correct?

how did it get bumped to the top when i found it?? thats weird.. it was in the new posts section of the site..

i know this thread is a year old but im gonna give my 2 cents anyway... for a wife, well my wife is 4'11" and 110lbs and a .45, .9mm, and a s&m.40 are all too big of a caliber for her. we got her a taurus .380 auto mellinium and its a nice gun. plus taurus has a no questions asked lifetime warranty. my dad was shooting old ammo out of his taurus .45 and it jammed and expanded the barrel. well he sent it to taurus and they didnt ask questions they just replaced the parts and gave it back to him.

tbh if it was me for home defense, a scattergun is the best thing ever, get her something smaller like a 20 guage or even a .410. There is a company that is making a .410 personal defense round that is a mix of a slug and buck shot. If you wan't to get a piston then get a JUDGE. its a snub nose revolver made by taurus that is cambered for .45 and .410

linky:Taurus International Manufacturing Inc

dont get me wrong but the judge has terrible recoil and accuracy...when it comes to pistols i prefer a 38. special or a colt 45.... but when it comes to rifles its the .243 good recoil good accuracy BUT not as much stopping power.... 12 guage slug works GREAT for home defence lol...

I would recommend a 40 cal of some kind, very mild recoil, like that of a 9mm but alot more knock down power.

my step mom wont shoot my dads glock 22 (40 cal). i know this thread is old but were probably getting my step mom the new walther pk380. medium sized frame that shoots 380

its a personal defense gun, for the home on top of that, so you not gonna need to shoot much farther than 10ft or so. If you are shooting some buck shoot its gonna spread anyway

A 380 is small but packs a punch not to mention it has a small frame my gf carrys a keltec and sometimes a ruger lcp great for ankel holsters or pockets in the purse just my two cents I carry a 40 XD 180 grain hollow points : )

i got my wife a Taurus 24/7 compact 9mm. Its not to big or heavy so she can carry it anywhere or just keep it at home. It does not have to much recoil so its perfect for a smaller person. Very comfortable "ribberized" grip and a large clip, just in case
