Front Sprocket Play

Ok, I'm almost done nutting and bolting my "new" 2000 Blaster. I replaced the swing arm with one that has everything except the rear brake bracket. The brake rotor seems to be free to slide in and out, is there something that should hold it in place like the rear sprocket, other than the caliper? Now for my important question, when re-aligning the chain, the front sprocket and front sprocket holder seemed to have a lot of play or wobble to it on the shaft. How much is too much? I have a video to upload if someone needs a visual (thank God the Britney Spears playing on the radio didn't come thru :-[). How do you upload videos from a android phone? Thanks for your help.

the rotor will float and the caliper would hold it in place.

a video of the sprocket movement would be good to see what we're actually dealing with.

the easiest way to do the video is to upload the video to photobucket (really easy with the photobucket app). you just have to set up an account.

Take the retainer off and move the sprocket along the shaft a little, (about a 3/8 ") and see if the play gets less, or stays the same.

If it gets less you may have a worn shaft. You can see and feel if the shaft is worn.

If the play seems the same it is possibly the sprocket splines that are worn.

If there are any signs of wear or irregularities on the sprocket splines, do not heistate to replace it or it may wear the shaft.

Stock axle? if so may need the two 50MM nuts tightend against the sprocket. If that isn't it then has to be the axle shaft splines (as blaaster said) or the splines on the sprocket shot!

I will try photobucket later when I get home. After reading all the other posts, if it is the sprocket shaft, is that an easy job to replace or would that be something to pay the money to take it to a mechanic for? Of course, I'm hoping for the best (new sprocket) and preparing for the worse (worn shaft). I will know for sure though when I check it out with Blaaster's advice. Thanks fellas.

Photobucket chopped the video up too much and you couldn't see the play...or so I thought. Slickerthanyou shot me a PM and offered to upload it for me....is that guy cool or what? Anyhow, it's all I have. I did take it for a quick spin tonight...cold here in NY. Seemed to run okay...not enough room to get through all the gears though.

Here ya go- not the best quality but gets the job done! That looks unusually loose to me! But could be maybe a loose chain, Take it off and check out the splines!

Definatly some wear there, let's hope that it is the sprocket.

First off, Slick thanks for the upload. Yeah, the quality sucked, but on my computer it was perfect...next time I'll use a camera instead of my phone.

I did take the chain off and slide the sprocket in and out on the shaft and the play didn't improve or get worse. So, now I'm just waiting for my new sprockets and chain to arrive. I also inspected the shaft with a good straight edge and my highly calibrated feeler gauge (my finger 8-|) and there didn't appear to be any damage or wear to it.

Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.

The quad I was riding before my blaster (I still have the quad) sprocket shaft spines rounded and i didnt fancy splitting the engine down to replace it so i got my dads friend (mechanic) to weld a new sprocket onto it, could do any more damage anyway and it still holding better than it did before and it happened like a year ago.. not sure what ill do when the sprocket needs replacing though :/

Grind it off and weld on a new one, can't stuff it up any more.:(

Hope the mechanic used the correct filler material and process for the weld, because the shaft does accept weld well, be prepared for a break.8-|

you know I have had a wobble on my front sprocket ever since i got it. never been a problem but its not as bad as yours!

something I did was buy another retainer plate and put it behind the sprocket to take up some play and put another on on as usual. Be careful though because it may make yours sprockets run out of line. Check it out

Suppose I will, well its held like a year so far, and i never go easy with the clutch on that bike :-P

That might've been a thing to try, but I already got the new sprockets and chain coming...only ran me $40 for all. At the very least, now I can say all the wear on the parts is all me! B)

Of course, if the new sprocket fits loose, I guess I can always weld it on like the other fella did just run it til she runs no more....nah, I wanna keep it running good....I had a blast on it the other night....pissed the neighbors off big time because there is no packing in the muffler. :D I don't like them anyway!!!!
