So I was out riding my quad, rode it for like an hour and all of a sudden it sputtered down and died. I thought just out of gas, but the kick start was stuck, I tried rocking it in gear n such, no luck. I was pushed home with my other quad, I attempted several times to pop the clutch and it would just lock the rear wheels, I could push start it, I think I know everyone is gonna tell me it's seized, but I wanted to post on here and see if there is anything I can do or try before replacing the top end. I have never replaced a top end before so if I can avoid it I would like to. What would of caused it to lock up I run synthetic oil, 32:1 mix it ran great, so if I can get some ideas or maybe help with the top end parts walk through anything, I love my blasty and want it back on the dirt soon. So any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Also if I can get help with which parts I may need and size piston, I don't even know if I need a new piston or anything. Also if its seized in the head, how will I be able to remove it from the cylinder, sorry just a bunch of thoughts racing thru my head I hope u guys can help shed some light on this. Thank tou

Before you pull any thing down, leak test it to see if a lean mixture caused the piston to fry.

A lean mixture will usually perform very, very well before the motor craps itself.

Then you have to find out what damage has been done, have the bore inspected and measured and then buy the parts specified by the builder of your choice.

Ok. I will have it tested, I don't own the tools to do so, but I'm sure I can find someone. Do you think the cylinder needs to be bored or re honed? I have been looking @ videos of replacing the piston head, it doesn't look like to much of a hassle. I'm thinking of trying my hand at this. How much would a shop charge to rebuild the top end roughly

Unfortunatly I am unable to ascertain the damage from where I sit, it has to be inspected and measured by someone in the know.

top ends are easy to do ken charges 130 prices

I am running a 250 jet, my question is when I remove the head, and the cylinder how will I remove the piston from the cylinder if it is seized? also will i need a new piston or just new rings?

It’s probably a fried piston or crankshaft but you can check this first. I’ve seen the screws for the magnets on the flywheel come loose and cause this problem. Pull the flywheel and see if it turns over. If it’s still locked, pull the cylinder and take a look. Pull the carb out (two screws), pull the exhaust pipe, and pull the four nuts off the bottom of the cylinder. Rock the cylinder back and forth and pull it off. Is the piston broken? Is the rod bent? Can you turn the lower half of the engine over with the cylinder off? Call me on Monday and We’ll get it figured out.

So, I have removed the bolts and attempted to rock the cylinder back and forth, the thing will not budge.I have read other forums about penetrating oil, what can or should I use that i can let soak over night?

So it WAS seized! It had metal shavings in the top of the cylinder a couple metal peices. I soaked in in ATF for a few hours and bam it came loose I am able to move the piston. So I am trying to take the cylinder off now that it's free but what tool do I need to remove base bolts? My ratchet is too big to get under the fins and the bolt. Any suggestions?

So, I got everything torn down, the cir-clips were the hardest part! but its all apart, the piston has quite a few chips on the top so i feel its best to replace, opinions? the chips are small and above the ring. 2nd the cylinder has a groove in the wall. 1 groove about 4 inches long you can barely feel it but if you use you fingernail you can feel it, looks like someone scraped the wall with a piece of metal repeatedly in the same spot, should I hone the cylinder or rebore it? I had the piston measured and its 67mm so which bore do i look for .10 over? if i can get some help on this i would appreciate it. thank you guy for all your help!! Im sorry for all the questions this is my 1st rebuilt and I want to make sure i do it right and learn bc i would like to have this skill to do my other quads too. thanx

i attached photos of the groove, it might be hard to see but it is there, also i was going to replace the piston with chips but if you guys dont think i should and just clean up that one i would like opinions, i can post pics of the piston too if needed

If there is visual chips to the piston it will need to be replaced. I would be willing to bet the cylinder needs to be bored too. Now would be a good time for porting and head mod.

Piston= $90
Bore and hone= $55
Cylinder porting= $175
Head mod= $50
Gasket set= $30

Mean ass motor= $300 plus shipping.

Take off the top end and it may have dirt build up in it. That's what blew mine up because I took my airbox off and had a crappy filter on it. Also I like to use Klotz synthetic oil and 93 and up octane gas.
