I'm looking at a 97 Ram 4x4 short bed for $750. It's a good truck but the front seal pours fluid . Any input on this would help. I'm not sure if it's going to be an inner seal or bushings to repair or am I looking at getting a new trans?

changing the seals is no big deal, getting the trans out is....
you wont know until you get it out if it has a bad bearing ..... usually the seals dont go that bad unless the trans bearing is toast.

I was told by a trans that it's the pump that was bad and I would need a new trans. I'm trying to find out if that's true or he's trying to BS me out of some money.

if its POURING out there's a good chance that front pump is toast.

this doesn't mean you NEED a whole trans........these things are rebuildable with a manual, a CLEAN workbench, and attention to detail.

yep just like engines a trans can be rebuilt. Im not a fan of Dodge transmissions to start with. my father is on his 2nd on in his Dakota with only 200k km and it has issues to.

find a shop that will rebuild it and avoid the ones that say you need a new one.

if you have a shop do a rebuild, it might cost more than a new trans, but you can save a TON of money by doing it yourself

I have the same truck with a stick. Mine is a beast. I was pulling 60' power poles last night no problem. As far as the trans go rent or borrow a trans jack and just drop it. Shouldnt take much to replace the seal. Let us know when you do it.

$750?

My buddy rebuilt his whole transmission in a '98 dodge 2500 gas. He had $300 (but a BUNCH of time) in it and popped it back in. We pulled the camper trailer down to Busco on it last year, worked great.
