I am trying to get an old engine apart to replace the broken case on my engine.I can't get the rotor part that goes over the stator off.It won't even spin or move at all.Is it supposed to just come off or do the screws on it come off?thanks

you need to use a flywheel puller to get it off.

I thought you only needed that for the part underneath the rotor?Anyone have a pic?

the part underneath the rotor????? ya mean the stator plate..the stator comes off with a screwdriver.....or impact driver(thats what i use)...the flywheel,( thats what i asume your talking about ) you will need a flywheel puller, i have a tusk puller that also works as a crank puller and a case seperator..you do not wanna try to just pull it off with a prybar or screwdriver cause you end up breaking pieces off your case.

is that what you mean (flywheel)???

yeah, the puller's pretty damn cheap.
if you're in a pinch, you can go buy a large bolt that will fit the threads of the i/d of the flywheel, cut it to about 2" long, then drill a hole through the center of it and tap it. then send a long bolt through the tapped center hole.
i'd say just buy the puller.
which case half are you replacing? let me know if you need a clutch side (right side) case half. i've got one for sale. pm me if interested.

I'm replacing the left side,it snapped around the shifter.I decided to just take it to my local mechanic.He told me $100 to take the left case off of an extra bottom half of a motor I had and to put it on my good motor not too bad I guess.

that's pretty high for just removing the magneto and then removing the case screws.

to get the case halves apart you lay it on one side and tap the shifter shaft carefully and the crank. while having your buddy hold the case.
the biggest issue you'll have is the shifter shaft binding a little. the bearing on the crank should come right off with a little tapping. make sure you hang on to the old magneto and stator for spare parts.

and hang onto the shifter shaft as well

eh, $100 ain't too bad. i had to spend about $140 just in tools when i first split my cases.
you might be able to get the case half off by tapping w/ a rubber mallet, but you'd have a hell of a time reinstalling the crank w/o a puller.
