I've got my top end all disassembled and in the process of inspection and assessment. I will be shipping the jug and head off for some work and of course want to clean it up as well as possible before sending it off. Despite my usually meticulous post-ride, pre-work cleaning procedure it appears I missed quite a bit of crud wedged way down between the cooling fins, especially around the spark plug. Since this is my first top end work on an air cooled motor, does anyone have any advanced and/or simple and effective method for getting 'er squeaky clean between the fins?

The fins are a tough area to clean and will always be dirty after one ride. The tough inbetween fin area I just use a wooden shim and put a cloth on the end and whatever chemicals, water, etc you prefer to use.

You could powerwash it, if the head and jug are still together and the spark plug/ spark plug boot are connected be careful not to spray the plug/wire. I myself usually use a thin rag or dish towelle with degreaser . . . If you need to you can fold the rag once or twice and put a small flat head screwdriver between it to get deep into the cooling fins.

Get it as best you can.

A good builder/repairer will clean the parts meticulously before performing any work on a head or cylinder.
