Well, maybe not, but the US military is doing it to 2 stroke drones.
Sonnex 2 Stroke to heavy fuel
It still uses a carb and sparkplug, but raises the compression to about 15:1 and uses a steel insert in the cylinder head to get hot and vapourize the fuel. A glowplug is used to get it started, very important to let it warm up too. The insert has small holes that encourage swirl, like we look for with squish. This is important to speed up the burn and have the mixture near ready for ignition when the spark arrives. They claim no smoke, same power and better fuel economy.
