ARRRRGHHH
Messing around with the engine last night, I noticed that I could only get into two gears, not sure which ones because couldnt go past them in anyway. I decided to investigate this issue.
Removed the shifter shaft and looked thru the hole into the crankcase and found a shim broken in half lying in there....*sigh*Time to split the cases.
Pulled the magneto back off and took out the case bolts to prep for the split.
Setup my tool and went at it
How she looked after open
Even though it looks dirty the crank bearings still feel great and spin smoothly(pretty nice since it is a 1981)
But all the good things ended there..
Pulled the transmission off and set it aside to look into the case first.
If you look closely in this picture you can see one of the roller bearings literally falling apart. The bearing below that one too is 100% siezed
And heres more pieces of the previously mentioned broken shim, and look at all the grime inside the cases.
Two of the three shift forks are also bent and need to be replaced.
The guy that sold this bottom end to me swore that it was excellent, unfortunately i could not test it right away as it did not come with the shifting hardware, sucks when you trust people and they sell you junk....
Now since I have the cases split I am going to replace ALL the bearings in the engine and trans. Have the crank balanced by Ken O'Connor and install a new rod and bearing as well. I was going to send him my jug and head this week but this will obviously set me back a while.
On a good note though, I bought a set of norman spindles yesterday and he told me they would be shipping today!
