Hi guys am new to this and quads in general, always bikes ave had in the past.

Got the chance of a 2003 blaster in great condition, he has done a few upgrades
0.25 overbore, duncan reed valves said its been re-jetted, has a stock exhaust tho.
I am wanting to put a Toomey B-1 or a FMF fatty with powercore 2 on but not sure what else i should do?
looking for power right through. does the set up with the overbore and reed valves sound right?
as a said not really sure and a bit worried because he is not asking for much for the quad.

Any advice would be very welcome

Cheers Stevie

If it's possible, do a leak down and compression check before you buy it. The .25mm is basically just routine maintenance, no real power improvement from just going up to first bore. Maybe with piston or gaskets, some compression gain was made. If it's still got a stock type air filter, stock exhaust and the air box lid on, the stock jetting should be fine. Reeds don't normally require rejetting, as the flow restrictions are still in place (air intake, factory port design and exhaust).

Just thinking, if an oil delete has been done that may be the reason for a rejet.

True, but since looking for Blasters to buy and being here, I'm always suspicious for sellers. Way too many people don't know enough about what they are doing to write a convincing add much less do the work. Phases like "it's got power bands", "240 BBK....been bore 40 over", "super fast, bigger jets" and my favorite "Blaster 250".

/\ /\ /\ /\ I am with you on buying used anything, without a leak or compression test.

If it is possible ask if you can take it for a test ride, or at least ask him to fang it with you in close proxoimity so you can see how it performs.

You didnt mention what he was asking,

Sounds like normal type improvements, nothing there for power improvement.

The most important things.

Does it run, if so ride it.

Does it still have the oil injection system and using it !

Many of the blasters after 5 years from new, need new seals. the reason, the overall design is not what it should be and air leaks happen when the seals go bad and this causes improper fuel / air ratio mixture.

Which causes it to run lean and blow up.

So thats why everyone here, says do a leak down test !

There is plenty of info on how to do a leak down test and how to make or buy a leak down tester. on here they can be bought for not allot of $$$.

New seals are only like $20, not including shipping for all of the seals for the motor. I just got a seal kit and did one the other day.

And naturally, a manual, many have links here, for a free manual of the blaster. To read and learn and there our some great videos and a group of helpers here to get help when needed.

So if the seals our original, then they are past 5 years and recommend a replacement.

DO THE LEAK TEST !!

Did he say what type of replacement piston was installed ? find that out also. If its weisco. Then you know they were not cheap on the rebuild of the top end.

How long ago or how many hours since the rebuild, thats also a good question to ask.

You really live in scotland. and blasters are there also !!

Sporty

Hey thanks alot guys, there alot i'll need to ask then! Ye the quad runs and is pretty fast its only costing me £800 so i'll have plenty of £'s to spend on it, it just seamed a bit doutful over the bore when there is no aftermarket exhaust or filter but has reeds fitted, but he said he has proof of bore an it cost him £480 i'am going to see/pick up tomorrow so i'll post some pics of it an u's can tell me what u's think an suggestions on whats best for my new project, thanks again ;-) time for sleep over here!!

Think hard on how you are going to ride and where you want the power, let us know your descision and there will be many sugguestions offered on what mods to make.

Thanks blaaster i'll be in touch, as for were i'll be doin my riding, will be mostly on flat ground lots of turns so would think bottom end power would be the way forward, what you think? any suggestions for the best set up would be appreciated ;-)

Pipes to consider for bottom end power are.

DMC Alien, or FMF Fatty.

I prefer the DMC, mainly because I am bias because I run one.

Couple either pipe with a reed spacer and the power moves a little further down the rev range.

For extra power everywhere a rechambered head and/or a port job would be other options.

You can also get power where you want it by changing sprocket and tyre sizes.

It is your call, you say exactly what terrain you wish to ride, and I am sure you will be bombarded with heaps of options to choose from.

Hey would a larger carburetor help? my friend has a 35mm carburetor for a blaster, what else would i need to do to make this work along with the full exhaust?(going with the fmf) new K&N filter also. He has wider rear axle 4inch in total 2inch a side? If i widened the back would i need to widen the front?

Using a 35mm carb on a stock bore is over kill, it will run better sand cause less jetting problems with a 26 or 28mm carb.

Making the back wider than the front could tend to make it tippy.

Ok so i got a 2005 Yamaha Blaster, in a bit of a mess needing some major TLC, as from what i see its pretty standard, apart from fmf fatty and powercore 2, removed the seat and the filter is a mess, needs new brakes(discs and pads all round) wanting to remove the 2 stroke tank to make it premix? plastics are in a mess so they will need to be changed(any idea were i can pick up a set in the uk?) removed the nerf bars and gave exhaust a good clean up tonight and its looking ok so far! goin to use brake cleaner to remove the grime from the rest of the frame and shine what i can! new K&N filter, new spark plugs, new chain and sprocket and discs and pads on the way! can any one tell me will i have to rejet carb if i put a new air filter in?? not even sure if its been done when exhaust was fitted(quad does not look as tho its been looked after! all an all it starts first kick and idles no problem so am happy at the moment. suggestions for new parts that would benefit me at this early stage very much welcome??

Whenever you take delivery of any 2 stroke it is a good idea to give it a leak down test.

Next check what jets you have and match them up to the mods.

If you premix you should increase the main jet size by one or two sizes, to compensate for the lack of fuel in the mix.

You should replace both sprockets at the same time.

You should have at least a #260 - #270 main jet in there with the FMF

If the filter you put in is less restrictive yoyu may need to jet up one size.

If you want bottom end power keep the stock 26 with a big main jet and put 18s for rear tires with stock gearing it will have bottom end power like a mofo also a mild port and polish would be a good investment

Thanks so much guys! have totally stripped the quad now and rebuilding it as we speak! check out full rebuild in the UK for more, thanks again for all your help!
