so the other day i was riding and did a quick u turn on the wet pavement because it just rained. after i did the turn i heard some clunking noise and the bike died. i kicked it and it started right up but wouldnt idle. so i rode it to my house. i messed around with the carb trying to get it to idle and it just wouldnt. then yesterday i was riding it and just keeping it idle by myself and then it just wouldnt start up

Today i check it out, check for fuel...ok, check spark...ok then i check for compression. after 6 kicks its only at 26 psi. i take the head off thinking maybe the ring is bad. the piston is broken on the intake side and missing.

so now im going to bore out the head and order a new kit...but now i was wondering how to find the broken peices. i cant see anything by the crank and i drained the oil and nothing realy came out. and as you can see from the picture thats a nice peice missing. is there an easy way of cleaning it without taking the casing appart? please let me know.

Well for one, the reason you didn't find any pieces when you drained the oil is because the oil is only for the tranny, the crank case is completely sealed from the tranny. That's just the nature of a 2-stroke. but it never hurts to change your tranny oil so no harm done. As far as getting out the piece(s) of piston. Take the motor off the quad take the jug off turn it upside down rotate the crank by hand and use a High preasure air gun to blow it out. That should get any pieces out so long as they havent become lodged between the crank and the housing. If you cant get ALL of it out then like blasterboy said you'll have to split the case. not to hard to do but not fun to do either

yup^^^ but make sure you got ALL the pieces out! its better to be safe than sorry so if you have to split the cases, at least you know you wont have pieces of your pistons in your bottom end.

well i do have the motor out and i am a mechanic at the honda dealer. im bringing it with me to work tomorrow so i can degrease the entire motor. but ill try doing that, holding the engine upside down and blowing air into it. would it be a bad idea to pour some oil in their to try and flush it out and hold it upside down?

also the engine rotates very smoothly and dont feel and holding back on the crank while turning...but you never know. ill try doing the air first and then most likely open it up. just seeing if anyone had any luck without taking it appart. also do you think the pieces got broken up into smaller ones or are they most likely still big.

is it hard to do...i started to do it in my house garage but im very limited on the tools i have lol. but i got alot of sh*t at honda. is there anything special i need besides the tool to take off the flywheel...i have that btw!

could have gone out through the exhaust and into the pipe? check that guy. may not be loose and rattling in it so run something up it to see if theres anything jammed. thats the only thing i can think of how that massive piece of piston disapeared.

Well if the piece that broke split in two when hitting the fast moving crank as it fell then it could very well fit into the exhaust if the pieces were split up enough.

You are almost definetly gonna have to split the case. not a fun thing to do, but i know with my blasty i popped the piston cherry so bad i had to have the cases cleaned cuz metal chunks were inlodged.

maybe it did blow out the exhaust. I actually looked at the connecting rod and saw little prices stuck in it where u can see the bearing. I took them out. Gonna try and blow it out when I go to work soon

i had that same thing happen to me twice now on my 02 blaster. both were cast pistons and both times it broke the case and the tranny oil got into the crankcase. (low tranny oil)
split the case and get a forged piston for shure, they don't break as easy.

you def want to split the cases. most likely what happened is the piston didn't break off in one piece. it prob broke off little at a time in small chunks and slivers. so a lot of it prob went out through the exhaust, but also there's prob at least a couple slivers in your rod bearing and crank bearings in the oiler holes and transfer ports.
split the cases. you'll regret cutting corners if you have to go through this all over again because you destroy your crank.
i just did this a couple months ago for the same reason and i have to do it again this week for a different reason (sprocket fell off the countershaft and slammed into my shift shaft which cracked my case) and i can tell you that it's not too difficult if you've got the right tools.
you've got a flywheel puller, it helps to have a flywheel/clutch holder. you'll need a crank puller and case splitter. search youtube for bottom end rebuild, there's a 3 part series on rebuilding the bottom end, this will help you in splitting the cases.

Quam is right. There is always the concern of the center cases being damaged from a piece of piston crashing between the rod and the cases and breaking them. They will need to be repaired to fend off other problems.

I'm not trying to spend your money, just don't want you to spend more after you install bore and install a new piston.

i bought my blaster with the same problem. when i was moving the motor around i kept seeing oil in the crank case. here to find out a piece of the piston crashed threw the cases and went into the tranny side. good thing i ound the hole before i put it all together. so i split the cases and had the hole tig welded back together and cleaned it up with a die grinder. so far so good with no problems. once i split the cases i found the other parts of the piston and cases.

Hi guys i need to know what size piston i got because when i took the piston out on the side it said art and in the inside it says 37f01 and on the other side in the inside it has an s. there is no markings on top but it has an x and the arrow please help me so i can ride!!
