to me it looks bad but im not exactly sure what a bad piston looks like except for the obvious stuff like cracks

Well its not cracked..but its discolored and alot of carbon build up
also my rings are loose on the piston which makes my piston move slightly back and forth inside the sleeve

Edit:

No problems just its a 1996 and i know it hasnt been rebuilt since then so i was wondering how bad it was,im actually considering port work from kennedy and new piston, but how long will mine last?

the second pic of the piston doesn't look good, around the bottom ring. i'd check the cylinder to see if it needs bored and put a new piston and rings in it

Thats alot fo carbon built up right there,it isnt jacked up unless that wont scrape off...but im not worried about that dirty piston if a stock size piston and rings are available somewhere?

Edit:

i dont want to take it to my local yamaha shop, they are way to expensive..i beleive i could hone it and put a new piston and rings in,where would i buy the stuff though?

I wouldnt trust these hillbilly atv shops around here! <LOL>

All we have is a performace plus (yamaha)

and yamaha of memphis (yamaha)

and there both super expensive

well i took it in they told me they needed a piston to measure it for the bore so i went home got a piston kit from rm went back gave them the jug and the piston and went back and got it like 3 days later and 45 bucks later.....took it home put it back together and i am on yr 6 on this bore... but i think when i do my frame off this winter i am going to put a new set of ring in it just because

If you wanna get that carbon off,go to your local auto parts store. Pick you up a can of "sea foam" fill a gatorade bottle with it, drop your piston in and let it soak over night. If that don't get it off nuthin will !
