a custom airbox?!?

hey guys, ya ive been runnin a k&n rite off my carb with no airbox, but now summer hits so im doin helluva lot more riding, and the other day i rode through a puddle not thinking about it, and i sucked up some water and my quad bogged and died. i just pulled the filter and dryed it out (my buddy just held it in the air while mobbin on his raptor 7oor) and i just kicked it til it started again, it runs fine now, but i now need to build a airbox, i guess the K&n's more for sand riding, so now to the point: should i build one, i was thinkin a sheet metal box using pop rivets and some radiator hose maybe? im kinda on a budget, so if there are some good DIY stickies or somthin, or a affordable aftermarket suggestion? (somthin under 100-150) and secondly, is there a power loss/gain from airbox opposed to runnin a strait filter off the carb? thanks for imput guys.

A straight filter allows more air flow than running with a box so it does allow a very small amount more power.

You can get a used one on ebay for very cheap, just go that route.

with a velocity tube. simply sticking a pod on the end of the carb decreases ventury effect over the jets.

in other words, it loses it abillity to draw or (suction in the air), without the tube right??

ya i kinda already guessed that it would lose some velocity in the intake suction, thats not really my question i guess i shouldve clarified, im more looking for input on building an airbox, im thinking of using some 16 guage sheet metal and making a airbox and using flexible hose(possibly radiator hose) the same diameter as the intake port and routing it to the sheetmetal box using the same filter. anyone built a custom airbox before? suggestions for the tube material? im pretty set on using an aluminium sheet for the box, but i thought maybe i could get some input for design. just trying to use any resources i have before i get to work.:-/

with a velocity tube, the air molecules are aligned and uniformly flowing at max velocity. without it the air 'tumbles' into the carb . the air passing thru the carb sucks the fuel thru the jets. the better the velocity, the better the jets meter fuel. and the better the fuel atomizes.

to answer your question about a cheaper A/M box get a CFM. You can get them for $90.00 shipped. Just look for them on ebay and then offer $75.00 plus the $15.00 shipping.

The bigger the airbox the better. Seal it up good too.
