so got down to the axle that i bought today, but i have problems.
Do these axles have 3 bearings?
I removed the left and right bearings, to find the outer race of another bearing lodged inside.
Is this the result of an ignorant bearing change??

This is pic with bearings removed...

But it looks like a larger bearing, can anyone shed some light on this.

Thanks

there should be a large sleeve that rides in the middle of that carrier, that might be what you're seeing on the inside

yea man thats the outter race. the same has happened to me before (i had to use a wood chisel to get it out). Get a big screw driver or something similar to hit it out with a hammer from the other side.

That's not a bearing race, it's a collar. I just did one of these on Tuesday. It looked the same way and here's what I think happened. When the bearing failed, one or more of the balls got wedged between the spacer and the collar and made grooves. You can see the same type of damage on your spacer. Make sure the spacer is still long enough to do it's job. That spacer is what sets the preload on the bearings. As you tighten the first nut, turn the carrier and make sure it's not binding the bearings or you'll be changing them again very soon. If the bearings are binding, you can grind a little off of the spacer face to get the proper preload.

Thanks for that, do you have a key for that link?

I got out the spacer today, had to weld to both sides to crack it off then hit each size to get it out.
Thanks
