Was riding and quad started sounding different (deeper) for a few minutes slowed and painful death eventually got it home put a new plug filter and cleaned carbs it has spark but only backfires every few kicks anny ideas?
Thanks

Take a look at your reeds. Take the reed assembly off and inspect. However, start by removing the carb and looking in at the reeds with a bright flash light. A small mirror also helps. How's the compression?

Ok will check reeds, also carb slowly dripping fuel out bottom stem compression is good

What is the compression? When you say "bottom stem" do you mean the drain on the float bowl?

Also, you could have sheared off the key that mates the flywheel to the crank. Pull the left side cover and see if that flywheel is loose, or spins.

I had a friend test the compression not sure was just told it was fine, and yes the drain on the bottom of float bowl.

Think this is The problem?

I find it hard that your compression was ok with a piston like.
Now stop while your ahead...
I bet a chunk of piston skirt is also broken off of the piston.
Pull off that pipe and look in the exhaust port to see what you can see.

The looks to have a few little scores and a small chip
Ill try to get a picture today

Could it be caused by just riding hard ?

Its time for a new top end. Bottom end will need to be inspected while its apart. New seal are a must.

DO NOT just throw another piston in it and call it good. That cylinder needs to be measured for taper, out of round, and clearance. It will need to be fitted with a new piston. time to yank that top end off.

And if Joes summation is correct then the cases will have to be split to remove bits of piston from the bottom end bearings.

Is that chunk of piston missing on the exhaust side? Looks like it is,,,, also by the looks of all the carbon build up it has been a long while since rebuild/and or cheaper 2 stroke oil used. Under the cyl head look the same?

Plus with all that excessive carbon build up you can/will get a "false" compression reading.

It is the exhaust side and yes under head looks the same looks like the chunk kinda got pressed up against the inside wall of where the piston is.
