That doesn't sound right. At all. I think you should leak test the motor and quickly . It is unwise to start a motor up after a rebuild without leak testing. Did you follow proper break in precedures. Making sure to retourqe head bolts and all?
I to personally run a stock blaster motor with fmf I run a 300. 290 may be perfect for me. 280 sounds like it could be correct mine is with the airbox lid removed as well. However the only way to be certain is to chop. It's running correct with the 280 and lid removed?
btw is your air filter clean? Stock or aftermarket?
