and i got offered to trade the suzuki quadrunner 300 alone for this cr500:

WSGS Trading Post Classifieds - cr 500

i will be doing trail riding and i need something that has a decent amount of power (both are better than my crf150f i assume) and won't suck down the gas. let me know what you guys think, i know you guys will say cr500 because it's a 2 stroke but i want honest opinions. thanks in advance!

the xr will probably be under powered and the cr will probably end up hurting you. If I had to choose between the two for a trail bike, I'd probably go with the xr but only if I HAD to choose between them. I'd try to find something in between the two though

well i figure the xr probably has more power than my crf150f and xr's are known for their reliability. and i've rode a cr500 before and i am not convinced it would do what i need it to, i do alot of riding by myself too as my friends don't like what kind of trails i ride (steep hillclimbs, tree crossings, etc. sort of like a single track or enduro track).

will the xr200 compare to my crf150f? the xr was just rebuilt with wiseco piston and rings but otherwise it is all stock. the crf150f i have has drd exhaust, k&n air filter, bbr rev box, 64 tooth back sprocket (stock is 48), and a few other things i'm forgetting.

why trade your xr250r for the xr200r? Am i missing something or did you mean to put crf150?

Also, the cr500 is a great bike but ill be damned if its a death threat on trails. No need for a 500cc 2 stroke for real woodsy trails. Great for open country but thats all im comfortable with on those beasts.

Honest opinion? The CR500 has WAYYYY more power than you for the type of riding you'll be doing. The XR 200 is probably slightly underpowered for any open riding you might WANT to do. As 245 stroker said, neither is a great choice for your needs.

On a side note you would be a fool not to trade a quadrunner 300 for a CR500 simply for the value difference between the two bikes. The quadrunner probably won't ever be inherently valuable but the CR500 is a legend. Trade, drain all of the fluids out of the CR and stick in a barn somewhere. Bring it out in 25 years when your kids are grown and show them how their old man can ride....

no i meant to put xr250r. some guys on thumpertalk told me the wrong way to time it after i rebuilt it so when i tried to start it it bent a valve. so the xr250r needs valves and the head has a couple of stripped bolt holes so i was just going to get a head with valves off ebay from a running bike but don't have the money for it right now.

so you don't think the xr200 would be an improvement over my crf150f? and i don't know if i really want a cr500, my riding buddies keep saying go for the cr500 because nobody around here has one and they want to have access to the fastest thing around. i might go for it but i'm still debating.

really, to choose between the two. id say get the cr 500. then save up and get the head for the xr250. then u get both a trail bike and a beast

alright guys i figure i'll skip on the xr200 and look around for a head. i had a couple hundred dollars set back for a new pair of red wing steel toed boots but i guess i can hold off and wear my old ones a little longer. i looked on ebay and the only one on there that will fit mine is about 490 dollars and that's way too high. i need a 86-95 head (i am looking for 90-95 because i think the late 80's ones were a tad bit different). can you guys help me out and see if you can find a head or send me to another site like ebay that sells used parts and stuff?

alright i just checked and i know for a fact 88-95 heads will work, not sure on 86 and 87 though. i found a complete engine that he said turns over smooth and has good compression. i asked if it ran the way it is as it is about 180 dollars. if it runs then i'm going to try to get it.

get the cr500 and like civicdude said put it aside and dont ride it very often. i know how the supermoto guys are and how sought after those bikes are in that scene right now, and i also think that they will be worth a ton in a few years.

alright i sent the guy with the cr500 a message and hopefully pretty soon i'll be the new owner of it. wish me luck guys! i'll have the meanest thing around and when i get it i'll have to ride it atleast once haha.

even if you get it and dont like it, they have a great resale value becasue of their reputation. She can always be sold or traded for something worth 4x's that of the quadrunner.

yeah when he offered it to me i never even thought about how easy it would be to get rid of. well it won't be that easy around where i live, people don't like 2 strokes alot around here and nobody wants anything under a 2000 model.

When in doubt go bigger!!! 500 = chittin your pants! I have a 500 sand bike! Ported n polished, bpred, stroked. Just plain scary!
Youll love the 500 trust meI:I

well guys i took your advice! i have invested in an entire engine to get my xr250r going! i messaged this guy some. he said when you kick the motor it will sputter but won't start, and he said if you pull it about 10mph to pull it off it will start but then dies. i figure that atleast it runs and doesn't need alot of top end work like my current one. got any ideas on what i can do to make this engine stay running? it looks to be in good shape. here is the link, i got it for a good deal i think!
