I'm reading that the stock air boot is way too restrictive if your running a bigger carb. I plan on porting also but do not want to buy an aftermarket airbox ($$). I like the idea of a clamp-on and have a K&N in the garage. My question is, How good are the outerwears prefilters for clamp on use for the snow? I don't do any mudding besides the ocasional puddles in the woods that I try to avoid anyhow. But will riding in the snow leak through and trash my motor? Thanks for ANY advise!!

those outerwears aren't 100% waterproof. i wouldn't risk it if i were you. why not try to find a replacement for the boot?
or even just cut the boot at the taper and jbweld a larger diameter tube on there.....there's a company out there (i think it's airtech) that makes a smooth bore tube for intake routing.

The Outerwears work better than you might think. My son used to race a 90 cvt quad, a Viper 90. If your familar with one of those you'll know that the carb and filter sit right behind the left front tire. We used a clamp on Uni Filter and an Outerwears. He had one race that it rained most of the day and the last class to race was his. He went out there against three honda 90's and he was the only one to finish the race and be able to ride back to the trailer. The other three bikes injested sand and water. The only thing I had to do was clean the filter and outerwears, of course he had about 75 lbs of mud stuck to the quad also.
One thing I forgot is your Blaster will perform better with a airbox vs just a clamp on. You might be able to find a 250r box if you don't want the aluminum one.
newnick's right about the box flowing air better than the open air filter.....the stock box/boot might be a little restrictive due to it's small diameter, but running a 360* open air filter generates very little velocity on intake and will not flow as much air per inhalation of the motor. unless you install a velocity stack between the cage and the filter. again the smooth bore tube would be the best thing to use.

Completely exposed. I wouldn't do it again though, to much of a risk.
It was the last race of the year and he was ahead in points, if we chose not to race we would have had to race the next weekend and I had to work so he wouldn't have won the series. There were alot of upset people that day and alot of tore up motors.
