What is wrong with my blaster!?!?!

I have a problem with my 1998 yamaha blaster. Whenever you try to shift gears it makes a hard popping noise and barely goes in gear. It will go through all the gears but it's hard to get it in them. You can keep shifting up and it will stay in nuetral and finally go into a gear. It will slip out of gear a lot too. What is wrong? Is it the clutch plates, the shifting star or what?

Is your clutch cable adjusted properly?

pull the clutch cover to give the shift star a look,
and the detent springs on the shift shaft, it has to return to it's nuetral position before it will shift to the next gear.

Theres a little metal clip for the shift shaft where it goes on to the shift star mine broke before and did the same thing. It would stay on the star.
