weird noise?

the compression test reads 125-130psi

That is ok compression.

Now ya need to do a Leak test! If you do have a leak, it won't take long before you fry the top end (experience talking). If ya don't have the money to buy it- all ya have to do is pay shipping both ways and you can borrow it, BTW shipping is $5.70 each way USPS priority mail with conformation. If you live an hour or less from pittsburgh, pa, I can come to you and show you how to do the test!

$11.40- V/S an top end rebuild- Your choice.

i took the head off and this is what i found. the carbon build up has chipped off and must be rattling somewhere?and a leaky gasket

I'd say there's a good chance that what you initially heard was detonation, and that's what knocked that carbon loose.

is the top side of the piston pitted up looking?

your that far now, i'd pull it and give it a look, you already need new gaskets, might as well pull the cylinder

ill go do that awk. any other suggestions?

pics in good lighting of the cylinder walls and piston sides

and when you get gaskets, no green base gaskets...........
factory yamaha or cometic only !!!!!!!!

heres the cylinder walls

heres a video of everything. it all seems to be shiny and new looking except the top

Well first things first in the vids all it sounded like to me was a normal 2 stroke with an exhaust leak.

Second from the pics id say run a hone through the jug providing it checks out when you mic the bore and if all is well either rering it if thats a forged slug or throw another top end in it if its a stock cast piston. And as said only buy oem yamaha gaskets.

I didnt personally hear a ticking time bomb but the obvious leaks you pointed out and the ones you didnt know of are bad.

yep, that all looks pretty good, you had good compression.
do you have somewhere local that could run a quick hone thru that cylinder just to throw some cross hatches in it ????

did i see above you seem to think there was a head gasket leak ???
that too could have been what you heard ??
how did the head bolts feel as you removed them ??? find any loose ones ???

and heres the best advice i can give you now....you obviously did the right thing so far, by stopping riding it, and checking things out, do not be in a hurry to get this back together and running just to go riding, take your time, listen to our advice, do everything properly and you just saved yourself some money, but your gonna at least need new gaskets to re-assemble it, then heat cycles, retorque, and break in period

the only bolt that felt weird was when your sitting on the quad was the one right above the exhaust port on the head. it felt loose . ill call around town to see how much a hone is. but what would yall do?

if the crank spins smooth without any strange noises, I would get gaskets, hone it, and get it back together. do your heat cycles and go to town.

I would go ahead and put a fresh piston in it as well

that front right head nut looks to be where the head gasket was leaking in the above pics, i see wetness around that area ???? and quite possibly was the noise you heard ???
and yes, get a local shop to give it a very light hone, just enuf to break the glaze and get some cross hatches in it, you do not want them removing any material....
just a very light hone, be certain they understand that

and be sure to use some 2 stroke oil to lube the cylinder/piston when reassembling it

okay, i got new gaskets;), need a light hone to break the glaze. what about the piston? should i buy i new one? or could i take my dremel to it and take the carbon off it?

Seeing as how your compression was good, and we had you take the top end off for an inspection, and all was good, I'd run that piston/rings,
Not sure I'd try a Dremel on the piston though.

If you have feeler gauges check side clearance of rod to crank. When working on engine stuff rag around crank/rod to avoid stuff falling in. Clean parts well especially gasket surfaces. DON'T use gas for cleaning. Make sure to install head gasket correctly. Make sure rings are aligned with pins when installing jug.

Also, because you had just been in clutch cover, pull it back off and double check everything you did plus look at counter balance gear. Don't know if mine went and took out bearing and case or bearing went first. Neither my son or I were driving it when it let loose.
