Twist vs Thumb

I have an 88 blaster that is 2 months old to me that I havent rode yet due to injury. It has a twist throttle now, but would I be better off with the thumb throttle at least for now? Been riding dirtbikes for over 30 years so I am used to twist, but this is my first quad.

I prefer the Thumb like Dude said the Twist throttle at times is awkward .. Even being a motorcycle rider I could never switch my quad over I ride in Mudd and Rockey areas and get tossed around alot lol

Thats something to think about. I guess for now I wont spend the $$ to change and actually feel it for myself. When I get back to riding it will be easy riding anyway, shouldnt hit my head again! but a thumb throttle is in the future.

Thanks

im more used to bikes so i like twist throttle, i had it on my triz it was fine, i can understand people saying that thaey are more fluid on bikes, personally i find having a clutch anything with a thumb throttle weird. thumbs for semis and autos, twist for manual.
i know that doesnt sound like much sense john in vegas, but it works for me. thats how i roll lol!

I've riden a twist on a quad and it was definitely weird. Twists are perfect for bikes....I think it would be really weird to have a thumb throttle on a bike!! It would make sense that the twists would work on a 3wheeler....but I haven't riden 3wheelers much at all, so I wouldn't really know.

You could probably get a used thumb throttle for cheap and throw that on there. Offset the cost by selling the twist!

i'm the opposite , thumb throttles are like kissin your sister , no matter how much you do it , it just don't feel right . I junked the Thumb Throttle on my blasty a week after I got it .
Good Luck John in Vegas

The twist throttle is real easy to open it wide out and made me run into a tree going around a turn mainly becuase on a dirt bike u lean to turn on a quad u have to turn the bars sometimes causing u to over twist the throttle and crash, but that's just me other than that I luv it

^^^thats what happened to me except i hit a barbed wire fence... but twist is good for racing people in straights, and in hard turns and woops i had trouble

Its boils down to 2 things
1. What you prefer
2. learning to turn
1 thing that stopped me from getting a twist throttle for my blaster project is the fact that you dont really lean too much when you got 4 wheels
I strongly prefer twist throttles but I cant get used to them when there are 4 wheels on the ground it just feels wierd to be at full turn and twisting.
2 and 3 wheels = twist
4 wheels = thumb
just my opinion

My bike had a twist throttle when I got it and I absolutly hated it, I couldn't get use to it and there was a couple oh sh*t moments where I would find myself yanking it to WOT when I didn't want to.

i hate twist. its goood for dirtbikes though (duuhhhhhhhh they come on them) just saving u all a quote.to telll me that they come on them.

I once put a twist on our blaster. Always rode bikes and thought that's how it should be. Felt weird to me when I tried it. The kid caught a wad of beach grass at the dunes that yanked the bars and turned what would have been a non incident into WO throttle crash. Put the thumb back on. Seems to me like you guide a bike but physically force a quad.
Just another opinion :)

Tried a thumb throttle and def thought it made the quad harder to control, but it was fun in the straight when I got used to it. The big benefit, I think, would be long trail rides where your thumb gets tired. Switched it back.

i say twist all the way i keep hitting my freaking knees on the thumb throttle and sh*t like that but im too broke to get a twist for now so if anyone wants to trade let me know as long as it has the tors removal crap ill take it

I agree. Twist throttle on a quad can cause accidents. :o

I have a stock thumb throttle on my Blasty, I will never have another quad with a twist throttle, I had a banshee that had a twist throttle and went over some whoops in 3rd gear crisp on the pipe, slid back on the seat while also pulling the throttle back without wanting to and did the longest whooped power wheely you've ever seen, nearly not pulling out of it, I almost pissed myself!!:o That same day I called Project Blaster and ordered a used thumb throttle and cable and yanked off the ultra dangerous twist throttle.I:I

I had twist on mine when I got it. I got rid of it. I wrecked pretty bad because of it. I also found that I needed riding boots that trip as a result of the wreck. I was coming around a pretty hard left turn, full lateral slide, accelerating, I was last in the pack, following everyones lines, blind turn, come around a sharper part and BAM left wheel hit a rock. Yanked my handlebars out of my hands. As it yanked them my hand blipped the twist throttle. Blaster lifted front tires off and wheelied out of control, accelerating up the side of the hill (we were in a little canyon with a graded hill on both sides) and almost threw me off. My right foot went down (89s dont have heel guards) and under my wheel.

Im pretty sure it broke my foot, it also made my big toenail fall off. This was months ago. My foot is just barely feeling normal by now.

Anyway. After that accident, first thing I did was pawn that thing off to the first guy who wanted to pay me shipping on it. Bought a thumb throttle and a vitos tors delete cable for it.

Never looked back.

Dirtbikes are good with twist throttles. You dont really steer too much with the handlebars, you lean. It doesnt affect the dynamics much. Quads require way too much leaning and turning to make twist throttles work properly IMO.

I just dont like them on a quad. I think theyre dangerous.
