I managed to pick up a clean little 2001 for $800. Gave it to my son for his birthday. The owner couldn't figure out the electrical. It had no spark & the owner was convinced that was the only problem. I rewired the entire harness one evening & everything now works great. However, it did have a no-name carb on it & it is definelty causing issues. I pulled it, cleaned it, looked for jet sizes but nothing is stamped. Installed a thumb throttle, but the cable end is way too big to work with the no-name carb. So out of frustration I left it alone for a week or so. During that time, my father decided he would order a new carb "for a Yamaha Blaster" that already has the cable connected to the carb. That carb is also nameless. My question is pretty simple - Do any of these cheap, knock-off carbs ever work properly? Are there modifications or repairable issues that could leave you with a functioning carburetor? I am wondering if there is any point in trying the "new" carb, or if it is a known fact that they will never perform properly. If they are a lost cause, where would you recommend purchasing a legit carburetor from? FYI-Pro Circuit pipe & silencer, mild trail port, reeds & spacer, no airbox- Uni pod filter direct to carb. Elevation- 5500 feet. Any suggestions are appreciated.

The only situation I would ever recommend a knock-off carb is if there are zero options available from Keihin or Mikuni. Yeah, some folks get them to work well, but I prefer to buy good parts and not have the extra headaches. Jets with no markings and no real clue as to what replacement jets to get if you need to tune it is one such headache I would never choose over paying more for a quality carb from one of the real manufacturers.

The Keihin PWK28 is a great carb for Blasters. It's 2mm larger bore than the stock unit and is overall a much better carb to begin with. It's well suited for a stock to moderately modded engine. I have one my my daughter's Blaster and would highly recommend it. I run the big PWKs on my 250Rs, have used them for years. Great carbs

Tip: if you aren't able to find the carb from the usual suppliers like PJ Motorsports for example, you can search eBay for new genuine OEM carbs for many of the 2-stroke dirt bikes in the 80-100ish cc range from the early 2000s and newer. I found mine advertised as a genuine OEM Kawasaki KX100 carb if I recall. I already have a wide assortment of Keihin jets on hand, so setting it up for our Blaster was a breeze.

On the subject of jets, I prefer to stick with genuine Keihin jets for my Keihin carbs. I would do the same with Mikuni, but I don't own any Mikuni carbs.

You will also need the correct throttle cable for the Keihin. Motion Pro offers one. I'll see if I can find the part and post the link.
