Ok so i bought a 87 250x thats been raced out 400ex arms works shocks extended swingarm widened axle, rims. Its pretty pimp. I bought it knowing the engine was cheesed. The guy said it smokes and needs a new top end. He said it was built in california and is around 350cc and will outrun raptor 660s.

cool. I was pretty much buying it for all the extra goodies on the frame. 600 bux I got it for.

This thing has been a freaking nightmare. Take it apart and the piston has ground into cylinder wall, no problem easy fix. Well I go to find a piston to fit it and get a 12:1 comp wiseco and go to put it on after getting the cylinder honed and the wrist pin is a 20mm ,stock it should be 17mm. crap. Well I couldnt find any piston to fit the rod that has a 20mm pin. So I buy a stock crank/rod assembly and it fits that wrist pin. So I had to give up the stroker crank that was in it so I lost alot of ccs right there.

No problem I could settle for a slower bike, it really dosent bother me that it wont kill raptors now.

Put it all back together and notice the piston ring gap was a little excessive after the hone job. It was already bored out to the max of 76mm so I just said to myself well I'll just ride it till it loses compression and smokes to much, no big deal Ill get at least a year out of it.

Put it all back together had to get new roker arms and a new performance cam and stuff.

Fire it up after putting it together and it smokes a little no big deal. After letting it idle for about 5 minutes I shut it off and restart it. It idles a bit and the the spark plug blows out of it. Son of a biotch.

The threads are cheesed. Now I got it apart and are ordering a new cylinder and had to get a helicoil set for the head. I noticed on the piston the exaust vales hit the 12:1 piston and left a small quarter moon indention in the new piston. I noticed this on the old piston but just thought since the rocker arms were totally mashed that the valves were floating but It might have bigger exhaust vales in it so now I'm looking at getting a new head.

This thing is killing me. This is the only and last time I'm buying a broke down atv. lol =))

well if you bought it knowing the motor was blown up then none of this should be much of a surprise then...
a 4stroke is alot more complicated then a 2 stroke...

Its a 4 stroke. I know. Its just that once I have something figured out and think I'm done, something else pops up. It would have been cheaper just to throw a used working 300ex engine in it and then I would have had electric start!

i had 2 92 250X's! the first one was my first quad, then the 2nd was one i rebuilt, and to be honest, even with all those mods and what not, i dont see any way it would be able to out run a 660 raptor(even stock) not claiming to be a genius or nothing, but iv rode and been around alot of the old 250x's and i just dont think their capable unless u do a motor swap for a 250R! but i may be wrong? any one have any vids? Do u have much knowledge of them? or was u just going by what the guy said? and im not calling u stupid or anything i just find it hard to beelive without a vid or somthing! lol

nah I dont really know much about 250'x either. I know stock they put out about 21 hp. This engine had a massive stroker crank in it. They had to take out reverse to get it in and it was bored to 76mm. It looks like the heads been ported and it had a massive cam in it and a big flatslide pumper carb on it. Big enough cam to wear the rockers down to virtually nothing because they didnt pay to have them hardened. Id say if it were pushing in the 30's horsepower wise it would have a chance to hang with raptors depending on the rider.

But I'm just going off the guys word that sold me the bike and have zero proof that it would hang with raptors.

I just want to get it running because it looks like a really fun ATV to carve up the earth with.

ehhh 30hp will not outrun a stock raptor 660 saying that i may have near 31 well i prolly have like 25 or so but still 30horses will not do it

yea, those old X's are fun man, it was hard for me to part with mine! my first one got smashed cause my dad backed over it in his F-150 on accident! But i still wish i would have kept the last one i had, and the only problems i ever really had with them is, the chain adjusters suck major balls, so your chain may come loose and pop off alot! witch i dont know if u know it or not but u cant buy a case saver for a 250X and the 300ex wont work, so u have to make one if u want one!lol, but i had a lot of busted side cases!

I agree with you there, we have a 250x in my ride pack and it is slow as a dog on its best day. Fun little quad but my blaster is even a chore for it to catch on the drag strip. They run the same motor as a 300ex with just a couple less cc's. I wouldn't think you could make enough horsepower in the bottom end of that motor to run with a stock raptor?....

Those old 250x's aren't bad to work on. They were the motors that gave 4 strokes their reputation for running forever without working on them.
Of course now a days 4 pokes are nothing like that....
My friend has an 80's 250x. He loves it, I can't stand it. It won't get out of it's own way and I can't go up a hill over a 4% grade without downshifting into first.

^^^ So true right? I feel like im in a tank crawling up the hill in first on those things. They're great for learning to stunt ride though, they have an amazingly easy balance point to learn on. What gets me too is that after 3rd gear the thing literally loses its balls, same with the 300ex

^ lol yup, but with a complete DG pipe they sound like their really moving, when their really not lol
