Thinner head gasket

So I've read up about milling the head. I've heard about it before in conjunction with other serious mods (porting, reworking heads, etc.). I don't plan on doing any porting or anything anytime soon, but a little more punch is always good!

I see that you can buy a thinner head gasket that would bump your compression slightly. I'm sure with everything else stock I could run this on the 93 octane that I currently run just fine. My question is, would I notice a difference in power? And if so, how so....meaning, where in the power band? All around? Would it give a fraction of a hp increase across the board, or help the low end or the top end, or the mid range?? Would it hurt on an otherwise relatively stock (FMF pipe, no airbox cover, twinair filter, boyesen reeds) blaster?

Would taking just a hair off of the head (bringing it down more so than the thin gasket would, but still not approaching needing race gas) be beneficial to an otherwise stock blaster?? Or does this only help in conjuction with porting and changing timing and all that good stuff??

I'm just a weekend warrior on a budget trying to keep up with my brothers and my friends, all of which have a lot more displacement than I do!!

I have the high comp gasket, and I did notice a difference. To me it seemed more midrange which is good. The kick start was harder to kick now by a little bit. Its supposed to add 3hp. Mine runs fine on 87, but just decided to switch over to 91 which gave it even more power. I think it also will be better to do the timing adv along with this goes good with more compression.

Increased compression will cause an increase in low to mid power, too much will cause detonation if you don't increase the fuel octane. Also, too much compression won't allow the motor to rev out to it's full potential. The biggest bennefits of headwork are found in the chamber, the stock blaster chamber design is poor at best and needs much attention. I doubt the hp increase from the thinner gasket is 3hp, but it should yeild a slight but noticeable gain on the bottom.

yeah i agree 3hp rating is a bit much for only having a .015-.020 thinner head gasket than stock

Probably just a gimmick trying to make it sound better, thats why I said supposed to. I would figure probably more around 1hp. Does anyone have a pic of a rechambered head so I could observe what would be different?

Hmmm, kinda sounds like it might be wroth a try. Right now I could kick the quad over with my hand if I wanted to!!

Another Q for you builder guys, would rechambering the head alone (no porting) be a worthwhile....or logical mod?? Or again, would it only be a good thing in conjunction with a bunch of other motor work??

the 5th and 6th pics show a stock head versus kennedy's head design. simply lookin at it you would think all he does is cut a radius, but he changes the squish band angle as well. i'm sure if you wanted he would mill it, but when he did mine i got porting at the same time and he milled the deck on the jug instead, because it has a negative deck height stock...
