so I got a question. The pipe on this 250r is a sparks mx pipe and is apparently THE pipe to have on a 250r but mine is cracked real bad near one of the mounts and causing a severe exhaust leak. I can have it welded at work but I wanted to know if there is anything special about welding pipe? What about the potential flammable residue left behind in the pipe? Do I have to clean the pipe before it gets welded? If so, how? Surely one of you guys have welded a pipe before

I can't answer any of those questions for you, cause I really don't know much bout welding.

I did want to tell you congrats on getting that 250r. You'll be very pleased once you get it where you want it.

A couple questions that have been bothering me for a while...

Why do people think they can just buy a new piston and put it in an old bore and it will fix their problem?

I have run into so many people that have said something along the lines of "going to jet this quad" or "you should put a jet kit in that thing to get it making power" or something like that. Do people think that there is no such thing as proper jetting? That jet kits make super power?

I just don't understand.

I have done the new piston old bore only once. Two reasons. One, OEM piston had a crack and cylinder was within half of service limit, two, was kind of a budget build. 20+ years later and I still somewhat regret it. Never had issues, tho never put that many hours on it.
Ya, I'd like to have a magic jet kit. Those are as useful as a carb rebuild kit. They come with stock jets, which don't wear out, and 99% aren't using stock jets. And all you really need is float needle and seat, and bowl gasket.

Anyone know what the stock carb is on a 250R? And do all keihin carbs use the same needle and seat or are they different between the sizes?
Stock carb on a 250r is a 34mm pj keihin carb. Any 33-38mm keihin gas carb's needle and seat will fit.

Does your welder/friend at work have experience on something that thin?

The outside (part welding on) will need to be spotless clean

IF your friend were to accidentally put a hole in it by using too many amps, chances are you might never be able to fill it.
1) the thinness make it hard to add filler without it being eaten away
2) the inside of the pipe will have too many contaminants to weld decent

IMHO: Have a professional with this specific experience weld it. your friend might be a welder but not this type

I have only fixed 1 pipe. Some kid tried to take a dent out using water and freezing it. Pipe went pop!!
I didnt have and problems with fire or flames or anything like that coming out of the pipe. lol
This was a favor job for a friend of my nephew.
I tig welded it!

The guy at work is the head welder and he's in his 50s so I bet he's got experience in stuff similar to this. He's the one that does all the tig welding here and it sounds like tig welding would be the best option for this. My crack isn't as smooth and straight as that one so it may be harder than that. It's actually cracked around where someone welded it already and didn't grind it down very well and left it all raised up. This pipe has 2 previous weld spots and a couple of dents in it so if it ends up getting a hole or not being repairable then I'm not too worried about it because I honestly probably need to replace it in the future anyway. This would just be to hold me off until I want to drop the money on a decent used or new one.

I appreciate the advise guys. If you have more concerns then keep them coming.

I would put a patch over the crack versus trying to just weld the crack closed

Here are some pictures of the pipe. The first is of the crack that needs welded. It walks around a previous weld that looks like was for putting the mount back on. This probably explains why it has a little bracket that it mounts to rather than directly to the frame. I'm going to see if I can grind it down so it isn't so raised and probably the reason for the crack.

The second is of the previous weld right at the main bend in the pipe. You can see how poor of a weld it is.

Third is just a picture that shows the dings in the pipe.

This just shows the condition that my pipe is in and the reason why I'm not too worried about it if the attempt to patch the crack in it isn't successful and destroys it. I probably need to get a new one at some point anyway.

anyone know of a good forum for trx250r? I tried to join trx250r.net but haven't got permission to post. I need to ask some advise about carbs since the one on mine is cracked and most likely needs replaced. figured I'd see what a good carb is for one that will probably be moderately modified in the future. Also, I'll need jetting tips for that carb as well

Maybe check out ESR web site. Eddie Sauder Racing. Might have carbs listed. Maybe also check with Carb Parts Warehouse or Sudco for carb recommendations.
