So my uncle is selling his 2004 polaris sportsman 500 and we are really looking into it. So as you all now I have a trail boss 2wd and I really would like 4wd so if we do buy it I will be selling the trail boss and putting that money into my new quad the 2000 polaris sportsman 500 are one we have now. It needs a rebuild bad piston slap and loosing its balls I would also be buying new struts and rear shocks and replace bushings and making it sound again. It also needs a new muffler. Tell me what you all think and dont say its junk because its polaris.

I don't think all polaris' are junk simply because they are polaris'. They have a few design deficiencies (but all manufacturers have some) that make them less desirable to me.

So the real question is.....(drumroll please)..... how much? Rebuilding the entire engine plus suspension work sounds like it's going to get pretty pricy. If the purchase price is too high to begin with, you'd be better off just trying to buy one in good running shape off of CL or something.

If he's talking like $500 for a quad with bad suspension and a blown engine then yeah, you could at least buy, fix, and sell it for what's going to go in it. One thing I have found with 4 stroke engine rebuilds (well heck with all rebuilds in general). When something goes, it usually takes the rest with it. Plan on a rebuilt crank and new oil pump as well because usually the junk from the piston got into the oil pump trashing it causing the crank to gouge...

Okay its my dads quad that I would be getting and he would be getting the 2004. The 2000 which he has rite now still runs good but its lost a lot of power and it has a bad piston slap. So it would only need a top end and the shocks I would be getting from ebay trying to find a good deal on some that aren't bent and leaked all there fluids.

Either which one your trading or getting doesn't matter, the principle is the same.

You need to figure out how much this top end is before diving into the project. I started a kawasaki project with the (incorrect) impression that it was just a little piston slap too. About $1300 later in bottom end and top end and left end and right end *rolls eyes* it runs great... I could have bought a newer model for what I spent putting my older model back together.

Sell the trail boss, and keep the 500. Whatever money you make just save, why waste it and dump it into a utility?

Why does everyone think a utility is so bad? Why do we have to be balls to wall all the time? There are times a utility will beat the sh*t out of a blaster(almost any time that 4wd is needed or it's muddy)! Not all quads are bad, and most are pretty kick ass! 4 stroke, 2 stroke or whatever stroke. As long as your on a a quad that's running you're doing well. Just stay away from the chinese crap and you'll have a blast.

Sorry, just tired of everyone saying that the cheapest quad ever built by a major MFG is the best all the time. Yes it is great, but get a f*cking clue already!

/:-( huh?

I'm not telling him utility quads aren't good...just that busted quads are expensive to fix. I have two kawasaki utilities and one yamaha product. I (and I believe blasterb0y as well) am simply trying to advise him to take a realistic look at the price of rebuilding this quad versus simply buying a better maintained (note: not different model or anything) version of what he's going to attempt to fix.

So whoever peed in your cornflakes this afternoon, tell them to hold it next time...

It still runs good it just needs a new piston....And I know a good friend who would probably do for me for couple cases of beer.....I would have to pay for parts still. I just really would like 4wd I don't know how many time 4wd would have gotten me out of some sh*t.

One thing about 4WD, im not sure about those models but my wolverine has a front diff disengage. in 4 the quad likes to go straight, turns nice but has no balls.
In 2, it slides real easy, but goes a little faster

I happen to know how many times 4WD has gotten INTO some sh*t.... bunches

Well if you can get the wrenching done on the cheap, I'd so you have nothing to lose. You're basically trading a trail boss for a sportsman 500 that needs some work. Good trade.

My dad told me NO WAY IN HELL he says it just has to much wear and tear he guesses probably 5000 miles. So he says you would be better off selling the trail boss and buying a magnum or a different sportsman.
