Stripped top head bolt.. ??

I thought my head gasket was shot but the guy that owned the quad before me stripped out the back stud on th top of the head..(The one pointing to the carb)
Ima prob tap it out and goto the hardware stare to get a flage bolt to replace it....Im sure itll fix it..
any other ideas? its STRIPPED lol no red locktite will do this project...lol

lol, i got ya man. all you need to do is get a 8x1.25 heli coil set. after you ream the new hole and get it tapped cover the heli coil in red locktite before you insert it. my unported cylinder has 6 of 6 head stude repaired this way with no issues.

I pulled the threads on the same bolt stud you did on Tuesday night! and found a heliciol in another that had stetched out of the hole, I'm going with the time-sert myself

for sure a heli coil can pull out if not done perfectly. i like the looks of those timeserts, it looks like a more modern, improved version of the heli coil. if i had heard of them when i did mine i probaly would hae used them too. next time for sure lol :D
 
the kit is around $75 and includes 5 m8x1.25 11.7mm long inserts, I'm waiting to see the price my Machinist can do the other 5 for, but I do work on bikes alot and have future plans (semi retirement) of having a small off raod bike shop when I move out of the "metro" area, so it might be wize to stock up on some goodies.
 
i was lucky enough to be able to bum a kit off my dad, its definitely more money than helicoils but imo a much better solution. the next motor i build for a blaster is gonna have all the head stud holes done, the exhaust holes done, and the base holes done in the cases. it's a little extra money, but knowing that you're not gonna pull the head studs out when you torque it down is good piece of mind
 
found out my machinist does not use time-certs but these



MSC Item Detail

27/64 drill AND 1/2-13 TAP FOR EXTERNAL THREADS
getting it at msc industial supply (people in the know never have to spend to much)

Im jobless those time serts look nice but theyre kinda pricey...
I dont plan on keeping this blaster for much more than 2 months
if i tryed just tapping it or using a heli coil think Id be in the clear?
 
I could do that.. i just seen one place sellin em for like 100 bucks for 1 tap1 tool and 15 studs..

Just wanted to know if these time serts are sold in auto parts stores or if its an online purchase.The vid for those is awesome and could really use those things.
 
The Time inserts look like a great idea, but I can tell you, I've installed over 10,000 heli coils and have never had a problem. I repair Lincoln Continental manifolds for Bakers Automotive . These guys sell these parts all over the world and I warranty that the work will never fail. I've never got one back. Heli-coils work great as long as they're installed correctly. The most common problem is the person that installs the insert. If you drill the hole off center or don't have a steady hand, the hole will be oversize and the insert won't work. Looks like we need a DIY on how to install a Heli-coil. Coming soon.

That is a great idea. I have used a heli coil once and it was for a stripped out spark plug in a V6 . Held with not a problem at all. I was really shocked.
 
They are both good fix, but under some conditions like for stripped plugs if you have to remove the pug often and if it's under higher temp conditions which would last longer?
There are times you cannot let it cool down all the way between races. We use both but just selective on where and for what and I would spend a little extra so you do not break down at the track between races.

I agree cause I'm sure on manifolds your are not removing bolts often, and as a company the is the most cost effective way to go.
