I'm trying to locate a woodruff key for my shift drum. My shop tells there ain't one but under neath the shift star there is a slot threw star and drum something has to go there that's what where'd off and started my rebuild in the first place. I got a new drum off eBay but it didn't come with with the retaining screw or key so does anybody know what goes there and where I can get it

So it does have one then huh. that sux that's the third time in a row that the shop i go to has turned out to be useless. So hard to find good help these days thank god for this site

Don't blame the stealer, parts list doesn't show any of those parts seperate, it's all one unit, screw and key not seperate. At some point they started welding the star to drum

Maby I should have it welded then? The slot on the shift drum broke and I lost the key preventing me from shifting on my last ride I'm not sure why but if I wrlelded it then it would not happen again .what you think

Well if your slot (broke) then you may need more thane a key! I will still check Monday. If I have one it's yours for free.

Did you tell the shop what year the shift drum was from??? The newer shift drum has no key because the shift star is welded on..

Yep I told them the year and every thing else he tried telling me the shift shaft locked it in place so I gave up on him and asked you fellas I already bought a used drumm on eBay but it didn't come with the key. Should have just got a new one. That would be sweet if you got one saves me a lot of head ache and I'm so close to having this thing runnin

Hmm. Interesting mod not really sure the benies though if it's just to help hit neutral i never really have a problem finding neutral but does it help make shifting smoother as well?

I'll let you know tomorrow after work. I'm 90% sure I do. You ONLY need the keyway right? You have the screwand washer?

They discontinued selling the older style that is removeable, only what's left in inventory then you have to buy the welded one, I went through the same thing few years back, ended up just reusing my original!

nice. think I
Will do this if it helps shifting since its supposed to be my wifes bike. so what do I do
here just grind down the tips of the star a bit? Thnx Bronco

You can change the shape and size of the shift star to give you smoother shifts and less notchy feeling with a less likely chance of hitting neutral.. Just grind the tips of the star down rounder..

Ok sweet thnx man. Sounds ex enough I have two stars so ill give it a shot on one what did u use I was thinking my little die grinder
