Scrambler 400 or 400ex or..?

400ex.

the scrambler is a belt drive and if you decide to dive bomb a pit like that, it will still be there til you go get a truck with a winch to pull it out. that foreman with its sealed transmission and shaft drive is a whole different animal

I have seen a Polaris 4x4 stuck in the mud because the belt was slipping, but i dont know if it was a Scrambler 400, and the ATV looked beat... Well i dont know if the belt excuse was true or not but that is what the dude was crying about when he was stuck in the mud...lol

There are alot good facts and opinions stated already so I'll just give my opinion.
Trading the Blasty for either quad is all on you.
My thoughts on the 2 bikes are the 400ex isn't that bad. the frame is based off the 250r. When you buy a service Honda 250r your getting a 400ex frame.
It's air cooled low maintenance and falls into the category of old school 4 stroke tech (this is good).
If you want to ruin all this you can throw alot of $$$$ and make it hang with some 450's.

The 400 scrambler is just plain an older bike. Expect to repair, replace, upgade just for that simple fact.
It's a 400cc 2 stroke which is a plus. It's electric start which in my personal experience is also a plus on a big bore smoker.
It can be modded to make more power then even lottery winning 400ex owners and 90% of the 450's too if you want to go that route.
It's a real good trail quad and one of the biggest trailable smokers made.

Whoever said utility quads are for work only is not seeing the whole picture.
They are pretty much the best thing for real hairy, bumpy, muddy trails.
LRD is right in that the Polaris is kinda in the category of a sport utility quad.
My best friend has a 350 Wolverine and although it's a turd it's a straight up go anywhere (4x4) reliable quad.
He's the guy on the blue quad in my Busco Youtube vid.

I dont think anyone in this post said utility quads are for work only, and my old Honda 300 4trax 4X4 is a utility and is definitely not the best thing for real hairy, bumpy, muddy trails, but my dads 660 grizzly is OK, and my bro-in-laws old style 350 Wolverine with a big bore 446 kit is alot of fun, BUT its all time 4 wheel drive, and it may be more fun if you could take it out of 4 wheel drive some times like you can do on the 660 grizzly..

.....or you could just buy a Warrior. I:I

:D As would I. I actually saw a couple pretty badass little 300ex's putting out around 40hp at Silver Lake last time.....granted they had major $$$ into them, but they definitely surprised me.

I like the 300ex's, Here is a old a$$ pic with me on my blaster in the middle and my buds, one is a 300ex and one is a 250R... I spent a lot of time on the 300ex and 250r and the 300ex was the slowest but for the type of trails we rode on it was the best.. the stock 300ex brakes and suspension would kill my stock blaster brakes and suspension, but the blaster was faster.. As for the 250R it was fast as hell and great on the road and the track and wide open trails, but my bud was not a very good rider so he spent most of the time smacking from tree to tree to rock to stump on the tight trails and was always getting stuck...lol But when we were road racing and night road racing or running from the cops that 250R would walk right by us. If we were going 55mph that 250r had to be going at least 70mph..

And a 40hp 300ex would be awesome!!! is that like a 390 big bore kit??? look>>Four Stroke Tech products for the Honda 250x/300ex models.

Yea they are slow in the straights stock, but do REALLY well as a trail quad in comfort, size, and are pretty damn quick through the trails with the superior handling and I like the seating position being low. Stock for stock, they kicked my ass going through the trails and it wasn't any different when we switched riders. My buddy's 300ex could probably still give me a run for my money though in slower trails though. I don't know the exact setups the guys at Silver Lake had. They were from Illinois and both had 300ex and both had some form of big bore, stroker, cams, etc.....basically the whole deal. They were trail quads too and not draggers. The 250R does about 69mph stock, so that's believable.

Personally it depends on the trail. My blaster is fasterr than my uncles piped 350 but the 350 is easier to handle in some trails

i have a chance to get a scrambler 400 for free. i turned it down cause i cant lift it in the back of my truck. but its all up to you man. theyre heavy and slow imo. when my blaster was stock i almost beat one

my scrambler 400 is FAST!! it has a ported reed cage and a clean up port with a stock port and iv beat piped banshees with it so if you have almost beat one with that blaster it wasnt right mines has lifted the front and tossed me off the back. its a 2x4
