Scrambler 400 or 400ex or..?

you can get up to 62hp out of them with the right mods, Mine had a K&N Filter and a DG exhaust, it was pretty powerful.

All of the numbers are taken off the crank, if you are getting 62 crank hp then 20% loss through clutches = 49rwhp.

Compared to a 15% loss through standard clutching, 5% difference isn't bad.

In that case just get a utility.

He's not getting a ATV for just working and playing in the mud so why get just a utility??? There is nothing wrong with a crossover "sport" ATV.. If my old honda 300 4X4 is fun then a 2 stroke Scrambler 400 has to be a lot more fun to play with!!!

holy fa-shizzle bronco,
no wonder you like dive bombin the little awk mountain puddles !!!!!!

400ex.

the scrambler is a belt drive and if you decide to dive bomb a pit like that, it will still be there til you go get a truck with a winch to pull it out. that foreman with its sealed transmission and shaft drive is a whole different animal

going to have to stop you there, I had mine up to the seat in water, the belt did not slip, I bombed into so many mudholes that came over the front, no belt slip. It is WAY more watertight and reliable than you think. All the PVT Polaris atvs I've ridden have never had any belt related problems.

From what I've seen of them, Scrambler and reliable shouldn't be used in the same sentence.

Mine went 2 years of rough abuse and however long my neighbor owned it being rough on it too, I never had an issue with it. Please stop trying to throw down what others are saying with pointless statements like these. You show no proof of it whatsoever, I owned and operated one for a long time, so I know.

I've seen others that owned and operated them for a long time and they went down the sh*tter. The poor performance and lack of reliability is why you almost never hear about them.......it's not just a mere coincidence. Buy hey go with what you want, but if somebody chose a scrambler over a 400ex, I'd call them batshit crazy.

We ran the scramblers (2x4) in our dune rental fleet. Keep in mind that they got way more use and abuse then your average consumer owned bike. They required a lot of preventative maintenance. If you waited til the belt slipped or broke then you had an unhappy customer and lack of income. If you relied the oil injection to do it's thing, then you had a burned up motor and a unit that was off line til fixed. We would go thru 2 chains a year and sprockets every other year. Jackshaft bearings were an every other year thing too.

Like anything that you own for a while, you get to learn where the weaknesses and strengths are at and deal with both.

There are alot good facts and opinions stated already so I'll just give my opinion.
Trading the Blasty for either quad is all on you.
My thoughts on the 2 bikes are the 400ex isn't that bad. the frame is based off the 250r. When you buy a service Honda 250r your getting a 400ex frame.
It's air cooled low maintenance and falls into the category of old school 4 stroke tech (this is good).
If you want to ruin all this you can throw alot of $$$$ and make it hang with some 450's.

The 400 scrambler is just plain an older bike. Expect to repair, replace, upgade just for that simple fact.
It's a 400cc 2 stroke which is a plus. It's electric start which in my personal experience is also a plus on a big bore smoker.
It can be modded to make more power then even lottery winning 400ex owners and 90% of the 450's too if you want to go that route.
It's a real good trail quad and one of the biggest trailable smokers made.

Whoever said utility quads are for work only is not seeing the whole picture.
They are pretty much the best thing for real hairy, bumpy, muddy trails.
LRD is right in that the Polaris is kinda in the category of a sport utility quad.
My best friend has a 350 Wolverine and although it's a turd it's a straight up go anywhere (4x4) reliable quad.
He's the guy on the blue quad in my Busco Youtube vid.

Well I want the 400ex badly. But idk if I can get it cause we are planning on riding either Friday or Saturday and the guy said it needs a battery and to his knowledge that's all it needs. But idk where I can get a battery around here
