rubber things in heat sinks

What the heck are those rubber spacers wedge in between the heat sinks on the head for? just protection? I took mine out thinking that it would help with airflow and cooling. Anyone else?
 
they're there to dampen vibrations in the fins. supposedly they'll crack if you take them out but several people have removed them with no problems
 
On a Blaster they reduce the vibrations from the motor namely the pinging sound that every blaster motor makes.
On dirtbikes they also help stop damage to the fins during a fall.
