ok so im doing a home port job tis winter and i was thinking since im taking the jug off, should i go ahead and replace the rigs while im at it? i looked in the cylinder when i took the exhaust off, and the piston and cylinder looks good. laat time i checked, i got 120psi.

you know what kinda piston is on there?

If you put in new rings you need to do some break in, and if the cylinder looks fine, like it doesnt even need a hone, and your compression is at 120-125 or up, no need to waste cash on new rings,

You'll probably have to do a hone if the bore is still good so that the rings seat correctly. I wouldn't mess with it until the compression is lower like 115. 120 is rideable and I don't know about you but I'd rather be riding than spending money rebuilding my quad any day

You need to hone if you are fitting new rings, it is needed so that the rings can bed into the shape of the bore.

If you are fitting new gaskets you need to do heat cycles to condition them and then re torque.

In short, a re-ring, hone, with new gaskets need a full break in proceedure.

ahhhh alright. i just figured since i have to pull the cylinder off, mays well replace them and i once the winter hits, i cant ride anymore. mx season is over, i got wrestling, and i have no where to bring the bike to ride. but a hone and new rings will bring up the compression rite? and how much do u think a hone will cost?

Depends on if you do it yourself or take it to the pros. Pros will be a bit more, because they get paid for their time and of course you get their tail light guarantee. Best way to know is to make some phone calls, quotes are cheap. They will try to convince you other stuff needs to get done though...of course, they are as bad as lawyers and doctors with wanting money...unless you use someone reputable. I'm not going to drop any names like KOR or anything, so don't even ask. :D

Like the other guys are saying though, don't mess with it until your compression drops off. If it is running good now, once you start cracking it open, you never know what problems could come up from there. Save your nickels for when you really need them. I:I

lol boreing and hone i cant do. dont have the rite tools. alright i wont mess with it. i checked the comp before my first race i think, and i had a lot more time on the motor since then. so i have no idea hwt it is now. but im planning on doing it in like december or so. so its gonna get used till then. i just want my top end to last as long as possible. u know. and i dident know if ken did hones. thought only boreing. i guess befor i take the jug off, ill test it againf and see what i got.

I don't know if KOR does that either, that's why I wasn't dropping any names. ;) It's good you are thinking about preventative maintenance though. As for cost comparison, by the time you buy the tools, parts and your time (adding in the risk of FUBARing it up) you are gonna probably be a little further ahead if you use a reputable shop...plus your ride will be back together sooner, just to sit around the rest of the winter...the North east sucks if you don't have a 4x4. I:I Worse comes to worse though, give it a shot and if things get screwed up, ya got the rest of the winter to fix it...plus, ya might learn a thing or two. Who knows?

Yea. Sounds good. How do u screw something up like rings!?!? Lol. And I'm gonna buy a crappy cylinder head to practice on first for the porting and since it's in the winter, i have no reason to rush. So I'll take my time.
