is this piston slap???

it has been running like that since i took it on a 90 mile ride with my granny a few weeks ago and i've rode it for probably another 30 miles since i've been back and it seems to be running slower and slower and i can barely start it. it ran perfectly fine before that and idled great, then after the ride i noticed something was up. i thought maybe since i put the k&n air filter in i needed to go bigger than 290, i went to 310... still no change other than it smokes more. better rich than lean though. let me know what you guys think, i think it might be piston slap as this blaster is still running on a factory top end (atleast that's what i was told way back when i got it and i've had it for about 4-5 years).

Nothin sounds abnormal. But It seems about time to do a hone and throw some new rings in her. Only way to know is to pull the top end and do some measuring. At the least, i would run a hone and get some new rings considering her topend is 4+ years old.

it's not unheard of for a 90's model blaster to be on a factory top end and run perfect so i'm not worried about that, i'm just worried it may be time for a rebuild and that means now i'll need 2 piston kits (the black and white 2004 is already torn down waiting for one lol). and i don't want to tear it down unless i REALLY have to rebuild it.

Both testers are worthwhile investments to keep you toys running well.

yeah but, you see, the condition my life is in right now i can't afford any of it. my mom is out of unemployment so i wait on child support checks to get by. it will take a while just to get money for a rebuild. how much is a compression tester? i know a leakdown tester is 30-35 dollars off members on here.

I realize that these blasters, if properly maintained, can go years on a single topend. I was simply saying that after a lengthy life on one bore, sometimes a hone and new rings will bring another 2-3 years to the cylinder. No mater how well you maintain your bike, if you ride it, stuff is going to wear.

yeah i know and i understand that, i just didn't know if you knew how long some of them on here have lasted. and i can't afford a hone i was hoping i could just put the right size piston kit in it and be done. do i have to get it honed and how much do you think that would cost?

Well a hone would be best, but open her up and see what she looks like. Sometimes(many will not recommend) you can take a ball hone and rough up the cylinder, then slap the new rings in and go.

You can get a ball hone that will attach to an electric drill. Just run it up and down the cylinder never stopping on an spot in the cylinder. Do this until you can see a cross hatching type pattern show up and your good.

sweet man thanks that would be so much easier for me this time around... next time a rebuild comes when i have the money i am going to get it honed and ported by KOR I:I got any links to a ball hone?

should i get 65-67mm or 68-70mm? they got both and blasters go up to 68mm so i'm not sure which to get, i can't afford 2. i am going to be ordering a micrometer from harbor freight when i get this stuff as well.

I got a larger flex home and it works for smaller bores because it flexes. Go with the larger of the 2. I actally have one for bigbore size and still use it on standard bores

so you're 100% positive that the larger one will work on the smaller bore? sorry but i just want to be sure of everything before i buy it lol money isn't easy for me to come by right now.

if a few guys on here are generous ill through 10bux towards a tester for you

man i really appreciate it and rep given for offering but you guys don't have to do that... just because i'm in a tight spot doesn't mean i want your help. it might take a while but i'll get testers and get my blaster rebuilt, i just don't know when.

sorry for not posting sooner bro. Ya the bigger size will work hence the name flex hone. It flexs out to form fit the bore when it is spinning full speed on the drill.
