Nology Hotwire vs Amr Monster Coil

It was slightly more snappy and it made the exhaust tone slightly deeper. i didnt have to change my jets and i did not play with the plug gap

I am running the nology wire on my sons quad (still waiting for the coil) Been back ordered since last year! Have had no issues with the wire.

I know Dually runs the whole nology set-up and has for a while with no electrical issues on his trail and dragger.

Well, calm down before you go all thumbs up :p. I see two choices from nology, a 3.0 ohms core and a .6 ohms core. 3.0 ohms is going to put out less voltage than the stock coil, the .6 ohms is the "hot coil" and could damage the stock CDI (mainly if used for an extended period of time, which a dragger is not obviously).

Now, the .6ohm core is the coil of choice for the drag racers because it's going to throw more voltage (same watts, just more voltage and less amperage) and we already know it's been used with success, the question is, which core do you have? the 3.0 ohm or the .6 ohm?

The PFC-03s- .3 ohm. Been running it an the Blasty's 33 year old CDI since 08'

How many hours have you been running it? :p That trailer queen of yours sits in the living room downstairs in a heat basement!

Is that the YZ400 CDI unit or the stock blaster CDI unit? The YZ400 might have had a .6ohm coil on it all along.....

Hey hey hey now!
I gone through 4 piston changes. Yes I'm running the stock 79' YZ400 CDI.
Lots of guys run the PFC-03s it's the goto 2 stroke coil for single lunger.
The .3ohm PFC-03d is the model for the Banshee everyone uses.

You've changed pistons only because the chrome or powdercoat wore off of them :p I:I LMAO!

There is an area of diminishing returns when it comes to less and less resistance on the primary on a coil. Eventually, the step-up isn't great enough to get a good clean spark.

I *think* a .3 ohm coil is probably ok on a stock blaster CDI as well but the only people I know who splurge are draggers and they don't run long enough to "overheat" the CDI capacitor anyway!

Ok guys this is the reply from Jeff! Good info here, great product!

Hi Bob,

looked at the forum .

The Nology CDI coil is PFC-03-S , part# 152-001-130.

This coil is made by PVL ignition in Europe , Quality products.

Most CDI coil applications have a Low Ohm resistance due to the nature of design over Inductive Ignitions.

The nology CDI coil is 0.25 Ohms primary resistance , lower is better for CDI.

In a CDI ignition the Energy is Contained in the CDI box(module) , it then blasts coil with High Voltage , sometimes over 400V.

Because of the High Voltage Blast , the coil would get Hot and fail if resistance was higher , so the coil has low impedance , almost like a Circuit short,

so that the heat does NOT get built up under operation.

Also coils are really just Transformers , so bigger transformer , better spark energy.

Jeff Klein

He is very well known in the tuner world!

Awesome!
It's a plus to know PVL makes the coil also.

Fo sho! Jeff is super nice to talk to I've tried to get him on here, But he says he belongs to so many forums, he can't keep up! he cruzes by now and again!

I run 2 nology coil and hot wires setups. Many many of hours on my trail machine and it has never caused me a problem. It gets alot better spark and makes my machine alot easier to start.I lose half my kicker throw because of my aftermarket heel guards and the nology coil was worth its weight and gold just for that reason. I noticed a big difference with it when starting the bike and also with throttle response.I have blown 3 stock coils on my blasty over the years.Never had this problem since switching to a nology setup( almost 4 years). I absolutely beleive a nology setup is the way to go.I have never heard anything good about the monster coils but who knows. I won't knock them till I run them, but they look fresh off the china boat to me.imo I have spoke to nology on the phone before about a few things and about using them on different machines I own and they always answered every call and were a great wealth of info. In my opinion NOLOGY FTW!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW thats real life testing and not just staring at a spec sheet and giving an opinion.Good luck either way you go. But I suggest a nology setup.

A lot of great info in this thread guys, much appreciated. Does anyone know where to get the nology hotwire and coil?

The concern I have about REALLY low resistance is the same as anyone who's ever dealt with a high output system. The load has to be matched to the supply or it will find the weakest link.

I understand the theory that a lower resistance coil will generate less heat (as it has less resistance) but the concern is the power "drawn" out of the capacitor. Too low a resistance and the capacitor is through putting enough power to have its own problems. The size of the CDI unit on the blaster gives me pause for using a SUPER low resistance for any extended period of time as the amount of heatsink it could possibly have is limited.

From a coil manufacturer's stand point, a lower resistance coil means it sparks more and lasts longer but he has less concern for the longevity of the CDI unit than I do.
