thank you to everyone for welcoming me especially blaaster for the detailed video and instructions on how to perform leak down test. Now I just need to find a tester that won't break the bank

PM Awk08, he makes a mean tester that will leave a little spare change in you pocket.

I am in the process of doing a leak down test. at first i had problems with the tester i jerry rigged up but i think ive gotten that leak proof. then i had problems with getting the exaust port air tight, once again i think i got that problem straightened out but im not sure. i had a couple small leaks on the case so i brushed some case bond over the leaks. its holding air a whole lot better than when i first started the process. its loosing about 1 psi every couple mins. im really hoping its not the seals as i do not wanna tear half the motor apart again. i guess what im asking is that iv any of u guys have had a leaky seal with the test about how much air does it usually loose in what time frame. im kind of just hoping that my exahust port is not 100% tight.

Spray your leakdown tester too with soapy water.

Did you use some thread tape on the gauge and fittings? I had trouble with mine, It was loosing the pressure out of the threads. I resealed it, and tightend it up, and It held.

Just food for thought.

i just messed with it and got it to hold air for 5 mins at 7psi. i had a brake bleeder kit with the little gun and the gauge on top of it. and then i had some plastic things for fixing coolant hoses and riged it up with a bunch of rtv. i was just freaking out cuz when i rebuilt it i messed up and put the crank seals in wrong and had to spend 30 bux for new ones and i didnt want to have to buy then again

Although it may not leak at present, be very wary that it may leak in the future, case bond is not recommended as a sealant.

what do you mean its not recomended as a sealant? thats what i used to put the case back together. the small leaks were just along the seam where i must have missed a spot b4 i slammed it back together

It is called "bond" because what it is designed to do is to bond together close mating surfaces.

It forms a seal between 2 surfaces which are pressed together.

If by some chance you missed a part of the case with the bonding agent and it leaks, the chances of the later application of bonding agent wicking into the area that is void of bonding agent is very slim.

Bonding agent has no capillary properties and may just sit on the outer surface of the case and the previous application which has formed a skin.

Pressure from within the crankcase may dislodge the material that you brushed over the leaks, as it may not penetrate the void between the cases.

The best way to fix it would be to split the cases and start from fresh.

Before you do that, use your leak tester to pressurise the engine and then scrape off all of the bond that you smeared over the leaks.

You may just be lucky enough that the bond had not cured and still accepted the smearing of the extra that you brushed on, and did make a seal.

Good luck.

Yeah hopefully I get lucky bc I dnt have the right tools to split the motor again or the money to get them right now. When I first got it I knew I would b replacing the crank and everything so I was able to damage it by hammering it out. I would wanna make matters worse

Welcome! I'm in the middle of a complete rebuild. Just got all my bearings in, so that's next on the to do list! It's a lot of fun. I have learned a lot from these guys on here. There's no such thing as a stupid question.

Thank you. youre right its deff a lot of fun building these things, but also very expensive lol. ive always been into dirt bikes and quads and always enjoyed tinkering with them. i wish i knew all the things iv learned from this site when i was younger. Im really excited and nervous at the same time to get this motor 100% and back in the quad and hopefully everything works out well.

Hey guys. Don't know if neone is still watching this thread but I just wanted to say I got the motor back in the quad today and everything was opperating great! The motor wasn't getting to hot it was idling just fine. I had a little bit of smoke coming out of the exhaust flange but I'm not worried because I will be getting a toomey just in time for spring hopefully. I still have more testing to do all I did was let it get to operating temp and shut her down. It got dark and I don't have a garage yet. I'm hoping I can get the chain this weekend and continue to let it get to temp 2 more times, re torque and take her for a spin :)

Yeah it was exciting I'm glad its working out I wanna give thanx to everyone who gave me advice and how tos it deff made things easier for me. Once I get it back together I will try starting a different thread and put some pictures. I plan on putting some goodies on it so hopefully I can share some of the process
