need opinions on cams for a 350

I would just toss a comp cams rv cam and lifters in there and call it good. If your looking for mild performance and better towing, you won't need more than that. Plus you will be able to keep the same length push rods and stock lifters. Anything more will require machine shop work.

Look at how the valve covers bolt down. If it's 4 bolts through the gasket surface, it's about 86 or older. If it's 4 bolts right through the middle of the valve cover, it's about 87 or newer. When they started fuel injection about 87, they made several changes. The valve covers as mentioned above, different angle on the intake manifold bolts, and a 1 piece rear main seal. The flywheel is also different. It's VERY doubtful someone put an older motor in there and retained the fuel injection and made everything work.

Just for info, there are aftermarket intakes made for putting a carb on the fuel injected motors.

I cant find a rv cam on comps website

i know its been a min synce iv posted in this thread but iv decided to get a eddelbrock preformer pluscam vortec heads and a preformer plus intake for a carb and get the tbi conversion all toghter its gonna be about 550 befor shipping

Before u do a cam do some research, I use mine as a dd and a weekend racer, the biggest thing u will want to look at is fuel management programming, u do cams u will want a tuner for it, think of a stall also, a lot of times with cams ur gonna get a little loss of low end but pick up mid range, all depends what u want out of it, once u start with performance mods u always want more....towing I would recommend a mild stall 3000 with a 2.5 str, look into comp cams, kelford cams. for what u want a 262 would work well and give u a bit more umph, if u want a solid trans go with a 4l80. U also will need a good exhaust to get the most out of it.

iv got the nv3500 tranny is a 262 good for lowend iv had people tell me to get a 292 but when I looked it up it was not at all what I was looking for

Hell no a 292 is not what u want, u will retain better low end with a 262 but u also need to think about what else ur going to do t it, add a intake manifold? That's gonna change ur power curve, if u just want a mild cam 262 is ur best option, that's just my opinion.

i bought a cam its a melling 265 and we are in the middle of installing it now and when i pulled the valve covers off and there was a ton of black gunk and on the passanger side there was enough to block oil passages going from the top of the head to the pan because there was a ton of oil leaked out when i pulled the valve cover off so were pulling the heads tomorrow and and cleaning them really good and everything else to get as mutch out of there as possiable

Nice, post a vid of it idling when ur done, u went with a decent cam, mine were f*cked so I went with a 272 and a 433 lift, it's an aggressive cam but I race it so I'm trying for over 400hp.

Hope u get it all squared away and it runs good

we pulled it todat and pulled the heads there was so mutch sh*t on top of my heads it was completly covering up bolts but 4 cans of brake cleanr 2cans of engine degreeser and a bottle of supper clean and the top end of my motor is cleaner were gonna pull the pan tomorrow i know there is gonna be a ton of sh*t in the bottom of the pan

i went andgot a new clutch for my truck because when we pulled the pressure plate off it was worn so i picked this up today
