hmmm you must have never torn apart a 318 before.
dodge motors were also very underpowered until they brought out the magnum.
i think my old d150 ram with the throttle body 318 had only 145hp stock. terrible.
yeah they had a sh*tty feul system (carb) they had a crappy set of heads. and the intake is junk.
other then that there not too bad..
but dont even get me started on there 91-02 over drive automatic trans nightmare!!!
Yeah the heads can be modded with intake valves from 360 heads, the intake simply upgrade to a 4 bbl intake, and the carb upgrade to a 600-650cfm 4bbl. But of course when I talk about building this motor up I mean, aluminum heads, everything.

30 Over bottom end, aluminum heads "2.02-1.60 valves, intake & 650 carb,
and the right cam, you might make between 280 & 300 chp. then you need to look into a stall speed converter that will allow you to run that cam. you still have a driveability issue to go along with your lack of driving experience.
Not a bad truck at all. I got a 1985 Dodge W150 with 300 HP 318 in it.. I love it and I have taken the truck from the dunes to the mountains. Good luck and keep us posted.
