Make your own skid plates?

I want to protect my blasty and am not going to pay $200 for a full skid plate kit. Does anybody have any dimensions or opinions? Type of steel? Aluminum? Thanks for all the help guys!
 
16gauge plate aluminum, a measuring tape, a sharpie and a hacksaw. I used a metal cutting disc on a circular saw for the sake of time. That's a good link above BTW...
 
Use conduit hangers it will not be as likely to catch up on rocks or sticks, it also comes in a rubber coating so it doesn't scratch up your frame.

and i usually stand the bike on it's ass, hold the aluminum up agaist the bottom of the frame with a clamp or two, then just trace the frame shape onto the sheet, i also leave extra to bend up under and bolt thru with the footpegs
and also up front...... leave long, slight bend, and bolt on under the front bumper mounts
then you'll only need a strap on each side half way back
i also glue (Goop brand) 2" pieces of rubber heater hose to the frame in a few spots to add cushioning and prevent chafing the paint on the frame, eventually ending up rusted, spacing it down with the hose also aids in drainage


edit....and don't forget to mark and drill a hole for the tranny oil drain plug

if u happen to have any aluminum consturction signs laying around they make great skid plates..just dont go out and be stealin road signs for a skid plate lol

problem i found with road signs is they're not long enuf to tuck under the front bumper mounts, and still reach the whole way back
if my old ass memory still works...it takes 39 inches total
every sign i checked was only 36 inches

^^^^^agreed on the edit. Without that hole an oil change will be a sloppy nightmare...like prom but without so much oil.....
