I'm about to make some raisers from vesconite (hope it is spelled right) My rear spacers are also vesconite, It is a plastice polymer and is super strong.
Little things do make a big difference...

Mine spacer are 2" wide each side and never gave any problems, it was a biotch to center it for the holes to be drilled straight. I think on the handle bars it would work great as it will break if you rolled before he handles bend or break(hope soo, that is what i think)
hmm the risers look like something off of the redgreen show..
as soon as the wood soaks up some water it will get spongey and wont hold the bars right great idea wrong material..

Nope no issues at all.
It worked OK as well- I would have wanted it to work better but thats just me
