i recently picked up a 96 blaster. the previous owner had the top end rebuilt. didnt get a key so i disconnected the ignition. got it started for a sec. then it died. noticed the head wasnt torqued so i replased the gasket. i could get it started but not very easly. had to really mess w the throttle to keep it alive. but it would just bog down and die after a second or 2. figured it was the carb. rebuilt that still nothing. so it had a 220 main. and a k&n air filter, w no lid. i figured w only a 220 i would go bigger. i bought a few different sizes. started w 290. but but w the rear part of the air breather off the gas would shoot out there so bad. and still had to really mess w it to get running. and it wont stay running, bog down& out. hmmm. figured i'd adjust the needle. went from the 2nd to from the top to 2nd from the bottom. also took the main down to 270. still took for ever to get started. when i finally did i took off and it died 100ft or so and still shooting alot of gas out the back of the carb. so hard to start and not sure how to set up carb! also the carb lid is just about stripped out. air leak?

well first let me say welcome to the forum.

If you set your nneedle clip lower you are making it richer and if you set it higher you make it leener (this is on your pilot side if I can remeber right).

I would say start off with needle clip in #3 or #2 from top and a #270 main with the lid off. Don't forget to check that your reeds are not damaged.

Get a new spark plug because your old one could be fould.

here is a link to help you set up your caarb....

hope it helps.

sprays alot of fuel out the back of the carb huh? thats called "reversion".. have you checked the reeds? chances are one is cracked or broken... thats not a jetting issue..
