this happend a few weeks ago on a ride...it was hot..real hot, and there was a long sandy river bank section that i noticed some pinging happening, i tried to nurse it and stopped to spray it down with water from my camel pack. right after that was a massive mountain climb, about 2km of holding it flat in second. i stopped half way to cool it down again, was sorry i didnt have my jet kit with me...i needed to richen up a notch or two

Was running a 30mm OKO, 162 main, 58 pilot and a banshee needle richest clip...i think my timing was too far advanced.

I made it up and managed another +-10km were it said howzit about 1km from the end :(

got it back up and running today again with a used 66.5mm stock piston, just new rings and a hone. seems to be pulling well, still must get this jetting waxed.

definitely too much timing. I dont advance timing on any of mine I let the cdi do it. When I built mini quad engines the only time it looked like that was when I decided to go against my own decision and try to squeeze a little more bottom out of it and twisted the stator......It was faster than ever but only lasted 2 laps before the unforgettable piiing sound. Ya can win if ya cant finish....lol

Broken skirts are caused by piston slap. I traded for a race blaster with an airsal motor. It ran fast but after 5 laps it started makin a lot of noise. Pulled the carb and reeds out and noticed the intake side skirt gone and plugging the triple ports!!! I got screwed on the trade, the nikasil was gone so there goes $200 for the nik job alone.

agreed goodman, im not really a fan of the timing job but i couldnt help giving it a shot again, i missed that bottom end. I actually had just advanced it the night before...

As for the bust skirt, yes, that was a few years ago, bore was done too loose and bam..it was also jetted to lean on that one.

The others are just old and worn out. except for the one where the rings rotated and snagged in the exhaust

pouring cold water on a very hot engine can also cause serious problems too, your only cooling the cast iron cylinder, the aluminum piston remains hot, as both expand/contract at a different rate anyway, hence the need to warm up the bike before riding it, so they both get to operating temps, and do their seperate rate expanding/contracting while just idleing

with 2 blasters in the stable, a few airleaks and a crank go once, i had a similar collection, till i got short on loot once, i had quite a few cast gsxr brake mounts too, took a 5 gal. bucket full of spent pistons and gsxr pieces to the scrap yard and walked out with $35

You could weld together one of those modern art sculptures using the pistons and some old scrap metal. There's actually a modern art class with an emphassis on metal sculpture at the college I'm attending, right now. Apparently, this is the first time they've offered it and it is going over really well. Some of the stuff I've seen looks really neat. One guy used old, broken bicycle chains in his.
