if im just using my atv for casual riding on trails and such how often do i have to rebuild it? if i dont rebuild it will it not run or will i only notice a loss in performance

whats up mahoney and welcome. sad nobody answered this one but ill try. if you are just doing casual riding on trails and you keep the oil/gas mix straight ive been told the motors could last for years.

Depending on the situation if you dont rebuild it could lock up the motor and yea when its locked up there's a huge performance loss lol

Just check it out or get someone that knows about them to check it out and make sure everythings cool.

P.S. You might want to get it looked at anyway. Your going to take it for some casual trail riding? you must have a broken one because mine takes me for aggressive trail riding and makes me drive her like i stole her the whole time I:I=))=))

go to a auto parts store, or sears or something and get yourself a compression tester for about 30-40 bucks..stock compression is around 120lbs i beleive, if you drop down to like 100lbs, your gonna really want to do a top end rebuild.

From what I know top end rebuilds will be the most frequant for 2 strokes, my dad use to ride alot of dirt bikes back in the day. he just would rebuild the top once a year. but if you are riding hard you may have to do it more often. comp test is the easiest way to test when you need to go through the top end. usually piston and rings maybe a bore if needed. not sure but what I do remember is he would go through about two pistons before the next bore or so up. remember
I'm not an expert but that's what my dad did on his bike. he also liked having an extra jug head so he could swap top ends while the other was bing worked.

generaly assuming its in a normal state of tune ,all the installation is correct everything is maintained and jetting is correct ,when your static compression drops 10 pounds its time, the time frame varies greatly on state of tune and maintenance i would say for alot of people that equates to around 100 or so hours
