Hey guys well I'm 18 and have been working a lot on my car I bought a couple years ago (2001 grand prix gtp) and have grown to love it. I graduate high school and will be going to college next fall, but am looking for a fun summer project to work on.

So I have been looking on craigslist for a four-wheeler, our family used to have a yamaha (moto four or something) and I loved it. We replaced it with a newer atv since then, but its only at our cabin. I have been looking at blaster's on craigslist because they look like fun.

Here's the description-
"up for sale is a 1981 yamaha blaster in fair condition. It ran as of last fall but wouldn't start as of this spring so is sold as is not running. The frame is straight and tranny shifts fine probly just needs a tune up plug carb cleaning and what not. "
lol not much, right?

Anyways I want to try to fix it and I'm assuming there might be more wrong then just needing a tune up? What are common problems that could cause that? Also it might be a 1991, but not sure, I emailed him.

Worse comes to worse, how hard is it to rebuild one of these things? I think it would be a really good learning experience, and my education is priceless as I have been told.

Here's a pic of it-

Right because old gas could cause that. So what's involved in the starting, just the spark and then the gas there right?

OK so it is a '91.
Here's more info:
No title, and here's what he said:
'no but its not stolen and a new title can be easily acquired. the quad is almost 20 years old and is bone stock tires are worn plastics are shot motor is low on compression tranny is good frame is straight shocks are good this quad ran last year but is probly due for a top end kit i'll take 400 cash for it"

lol so like 250 cash is probably reasonable. Let's see, how much do tires cost? Also what negative effect is the plastics being shot going to have? Probably need a new motor/ rebuild right?

Wow, so quite a bit more money would be need to put in. What about those rebuild kits off ebay, would those work to fix the motor problems?

Thanks.

Um, I guess it depends on the price. But it'd be fun to make it a bit faster. I would probably be repainting it.

Do these engines get to a point where they can't be rebuilt? Because a new engine looks a lot more expensive then just rebuilding the top end.

i just got my blaster a week ago and enjoy it much more than my warrior i traded for it so i say buy it itll b worth the money to rebuild it as for rebuilding it i think thats all u need ^^^^

Also, when I go to look at, what should I watch out for? I.E. obvious things that would make it totally not worth while? Shift through the gears, make sure it rolls in neutral? try to start it?

lol sorry just don't wanna get taken for a ride.
